I was wondering how you are or have dealt with this problem?
I have been working even 12+ hours daily lately and have noticed my vision has deteriorated quite a bit.
Harder to focus and to keep my eyes sight sharp , kind of tired eyes.
Working on a 24" Full HD Led monitor, 59Hz.
    Is f.lux really that good?
    Any other suggestions?

I think the best advice is to stop staring at a computer screen for 12+ hours a day.

F.Lux is really, really useful for people that spend so much time with computer screens... It's not magic, it won't save your eyes from early deterioration, BUT, it drastically reduce blue light amount in the screen spectre, not litteral blue light (well it's blue, but a bit more complicated and my english is not good enough to explain it) so it reduce fairly enough eye fatigue, especially at night when the blue light are the most harmful. If you want a real "medical" thingy against this (ie blue light, which is the main reason of screen-related eye fatigue and deterioration ), you can go for Gunnar or Gunnar-like glasses, it's the same principle but with real physical anti-blue light filters.

But to me the software is doing a great job at it, at least if you dont already have problems, it's preventive and reductive, and I highly recommend it for anyone working with computers a lot or spending hours with it, if the yellow-ish screen is too much to you, just tune it lower in the settings, but you get used to it, and you even feel like your screens are more warm, less harmful, less dazzling and fatiguing (esp at Night and esp LED screens). There is also a quick button for turning off the anti-blue light effect when working on color-sensitive work or videogames (it's really not needed in videogames, that's just a bit more yellow, nothing game-breaking)

Reduce colour temperature of your monitor. Buy one with either high frequency PWM dimmer (cycling backlight on and off in a very fast manner) or current controlled dimmer. Benq BL2411 doesn't have any PWM .
Low frequency PWM (below 1000Hz) may cause excessive eyestrain, headaches, too much blue light then causes insomnia.

    Thanks for this F.lux tip..
So yeah, this is about 'color temperature'. Our computer screens are set to daylight color temperature (which is blue).
Ambient lights (Led spots or TL) of most rooms is much lower (yellow/red). The difference results in eye fatigue.
Apparently, F.lux adapts the screen to the color temperature of ambient lighting, resulting in less eye fatigue.

But 12 hr screen days are the main culprit, @flyingsleeves is right. The best software for that: Take a Break 1, 2 & 3 (Win/Mac)..

Eye vision? What other sort is there? Ear vision? Foot vision? :D

Get to the opticians? Eyesight deteriorates so slowly you get used to it, but your eye muscles are working harder on the lens.

no it isn't. experts all recommend taking frequent breaks from staring at the screen. you're essentially staring at a light bulb. the #1 thing you can do is to use the 20-20-20 rule.

If you spend more than two hours a day on a computer, you may have a condition called Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).

CVS affects 64% to 90% of all office workers and while it does not cause permanent eye damage, it can be an unpleasant side effect of too much screen time.

    CVS symptoms include:

    • Eye strain
    • Redness
    • Iritation or dryness
You may also experience burning eyes, double or blurred vision, headaches and neck or shoulder pain.

If this sounds all too familiar, here are some guidelines and computer eye strain tips to help alleviate these nagging symptoms.

Tips for Eliminating Computer Eye Strain
    1. Take a break - Use the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away.
    2. Blink frequently - Do not forget to blink periodically. Staring at computer screens can dry our eyes and cause redness and irritation.
    3. Consider computer glasses - Computer glasses are prescription eyewear that are specifically designed for computer work. They allow you to focus your eyes on the distance of a computer screen, which is generally farther away than reading material. Computer glasses optimize your eyesight when you're looking at digital screens and help to reduce glare.
    4. Use proper lighting - Use incandescent lighting and avoid high-intensity lamps, which cast shadows and create glare. Place a dim light on either side of your workstation to create equal brightness without dark, shadowed areas.
    5. Check your monitor’s position - The position of your computer monitor can add to your eyestrain. It is important that it be positioned at the proper distance away from your eyes. Optimally, your computer screen should be 15 to 20 degrees below eye level (about 4 or 5 inches) as measured from the center of the screen and 20 to 28 inches from the eyes.
    6. Adjust your screen resolution - Make sure your monitor has a high-resolution display. A higher resolution produces sharper type and crisper images, reducing eye strain.
    7. Minimize glare - Clean your monitor regularly to remove dust and consider installing an anti-glare screen. It also helps to keep shades drawn to prevent glare from outside sources.
    8. Try massage or eye cupping - Massaging the area around the eyes will help relax the muscles and can be very comforting. Rub your hands together to create friction and warmth, then gently cup your palms over your closed eyes and rest them.
    9. Take your vitamins - Getting the proper amount of vitamins and minerals is important for overall eye health. Opt for vitamins that contain antioxidants and ingredients that help improve the health of the eye and reduce eyestrain, such as vitamins A, C and E with a B complex and Zinc.

  11. F.Lux helps but the important thing is to take breaks. Being a vision martyr isn't happening. Look away from the screen in that 20- 20-20 scheme and think about getting some of those computer glasses. Please don't become that horror story that we tell to our children to keep them safe..."Yes Little Sally, I knew this nice, talented fellow fellow named VonSteyr who's eyeballs fell right out of his head and into a bowl of spaghetti from staring at the monitor for too long. Then his little Dachshund Fido ate them all up in two big doggie bites. He never was able to play video games ever again!".

Computer glasses helped me a whole lot. You can grab some good ones for about $50 dollars. I wear them anytime I use the computer for long periods of time.

white backgrounds are the problem, not monitors.

find a way to get a Dark Theme everywhere, or at least in your most used apps.

i work in an office all day every day and 95% of my work is done on the computer. i have prescription computer glasses and i make it a point to get up and walk a loop around the entire office every 15 - 20 minutes (takes less than a minute and allows me to focus my eyes at many different distances). those two things will help you a lot.

First move your monitors back. My vision used to need +0.5 lenses but then I built a new studio and my monitors had to be around 3-4 feet away (because I got 4 of them) and after a year I went back to the optometrist and the tests showed 0.0.

Second, use the 20,20,20 rule. Every 20 minutes look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

^look momma I used my industrial engineering degree

Well, yes it is. @flyingsleeves didnt said "take breaks to reduce your eye fatigue" he said "STOP spending 12hr on a screen" completely different and irrelevant.

But yeah, who can say "Nah don't take breaks it sucks"? Even in the sound domain our hears NEED breaks too, so I'm not saying "You can just stay 18hr per day in front of your screen if you get F.Lux" not my point.

Yes good advice too, have dark themes on Chrome, YouTube, some Plugins, GMAIL, etc, it really helps.

Yes I did that, got two colour-LED projectors behind my desk, all my lighting is really tamed in the night + F.lux and usual breaks, I think that's enough to prevent eye fatigue or damage, at least in this context (I mean there is no magic, you work with screens daily, you know you'll have more eye problems than some landscaper dude.)

Do you think computer glasses are really more effective than a software like F.Lux? On the paper they are doing the exact same thing but something is telling me than filtered glasses in the physical world might be better :dunno:

not the same thing at all. they are prescription lenses that are focused at the distance of my computer monitor (similar to reading glasses but tailored for my eyes and focused a bit farther away than reading glasses), with uv and glare filter coatings.

My advice: stop doing high school jokes/trolling on every thread you find, and use that moments to rest your eyes. That will help a lot.
