i want to get more familiar with sound selection and basically gain a better understanding whats out there in terms of samples/instruments...

do you recommend any particular way to go about this?

maybe start from the most popular sound/instrument makers? its too many to consider/hear everything

    any other ideas

    thanks

First of all, you should analyze what you want to hear at all, what do you find exciting, what you don't know yet. Which style of music do you like and which style of music you don't know yet. Almost everything is now available on samples or as a wav file. The main reason is that you can earn money with it. The diversity increases every day. You can of course record your own samples. You would have to have several lifetimes to be able to hear all the samples.
