Not true at all it is an OLD contest and it was for schlager songs at first and they had a jury in every country that was locked in in a room and could not hear the songs over and over again like today they heard them when it was played at the show
And they also had a symphonic orchestra playing all the songs and it was supported later on by session electric guitarists and electric bass players and synthplayers
Today EVERYTHING is playback and i even think they dont sing they mimic the singing i could be wrong though..
However som years before the year 2000 it is sort of became politics hmm well maybe even before that as Israel joined in the early 70,s or so i wonder why?
Israel is NOT part of EU and why not let Palestine join aswell?
If Israel can be in the competion hell why not just call it a WORLD song contest?.
Turkey also joined in the 70,s and a.f.a.i.k they are in Asia not europe not to mention Australia who joined in 2015.

There's nothing funny about Eurovision, only stuff to be disgusted with, it's a "contest" organized by tv channels, participants don't even compete nation wise anymore, so it is only going to get worse, since most countries' tv channels denote a contender of their own choosing to "represent their country". The whole thing has boiled down to a lighting show extravaganza in order to make money from cell phone votes. Voting costs about 1.5 euros if i am correct, so if they gather, let's say 1 mil votes, they made 1.5 mil euros minus the expenses. My guess is they make much more from it.
And you, are not even remotely funny. If there is something like good, intelligent pop music from the soul, Europeans make it.
Madonna vs Sade, Sade wins hands down anytime any place, the gal CAN sing.
Rihanna vs Adele, Adele wins hands down anytime any place the gal CAN sing.
Backstreet Boys vs Take That, Take That win hands down anytime any place, those boys, no matter how lame, they CAN sing.

You are too funny....English is known to be a very simple language first(it is one reason more to write songs in English),and sorry but if one population is subtle,Americans and their English are not the first according to my requirements,even if I like Americans.
You like the "top lyrics" written in English because you don't (try to) understand other languages,like most of English spoken people.
Europeans produce English songs because music is business today,especially pop music,English is understood by a maximum amount of people in the world and they will sell it better.

Europeans do speak and understand many languages, unlike Americans, who can only speak and understand `American English`. I assume it is your case...
Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, Rome, etc are very cosmopolitan cities. Not to mention London (not a part of the EU continent, but still consider as a EU country). There you can find many universities (many tuition-free by the way) where subjects are taught in different languages.

Top of the charts is Beyonce. Probably the kind of `music` that you like. The latest trends and charts...

I`m curious to know an example from the `mastery of the nuances and emotional subtleties of English among Swedish artists` you are talking about...

As I wrote, it is just a question of economic dominance. I guess most of American people don't even know there are millions of not-american songs around the world. That's because 99,9% of pop music and movies in the U.S.A. are strictly made in the U.S. and exported all over the world. Sometimes they have echoes of what happens on the rest of the world ("gangma style" phenomena and whatever), but they remain the 0,01% exceptions. For the rest, if you are not American (or English, Irish, native english speaker) you cannot even think to sell your "pop music" in the U.S.A. When people talk about "pop music" such as "the best songs ever", "the most beautiful lyrics" etc. they just refer to American pop music (or products by English speaking artists famous in America, such as U2, Abba, Beatles etc.). It is just economic dominance, not reality. Regarding the Eurovision show, it is embarassing not because of the songs (as cheesy, embarassing and commercial as any other U.S. "pop music" products), but because artists from Ukraine, Bulgaria, Austria and such sing in English rather than in their own tongue. It's like: "hey, I'm here, please buy my song" American dream...
