I've had the same problem for years. The damned Protools Video Engine.
It causes the machine to hang, freeze, stop working until I disable the video engine of the task manager.

Any solution to these eternal problems?
I have a very good PC machine with 2 solid state disks. Memory of 32. A GTX 980ti video card.

The protools fly! But always the damn video engine that makes me want to kill all the people of AVID.

    Greetings and thanks!

Better late then never: Never use heavy compressed video codecs like H264 or AVC. Instead, trancode video with Avid's own DNxHD, the 36 Mbit /1080P variant usually works. Preferably run the video from a separate SSD. If your session Is too heavy/computer is too weak for the session, use a video peripheral like BlackMagic Intensity or Aja Kona.
Other solutions are running the video on a second computer with Videoslave (Mac) or Xjadeo (Win) that is synced to the Pro tools Rig.
