    Hi All..........

    I play a bit E_Guitar... have a Foucusrite Saffire Pro 24......the Preamps sound a bit harsh..to me.......
My thoughts, connecting a DI Box to the Input of a SPL Gold Mike (first generation)
and back into the Saffire Pro 24......
    Recording with a tubesound.........
Could i damage my Gold Mike.....or would the E_Guitar signal be to low ???

DI output is line level right, the same as your preamp input?

The guitar output is HI-Zi. Don't connect your guitar directly to the pre-amp. It will heart your guitar or pre-amp. Buy a direct box to put in between.

Your DI's XLR outputs are mic level, you'll be fine going into a Goldmike mic input.
You can go to an amp at the same time through your DI's Link jack output.

    1. There's absolutely no way it could break your preamp.
    2. It will probably sound like shit, muddy and wimpy

I have a pro 40 also. I really do think the pre's of the pro 40 don't sound bad at all. I did buy a Tube MP for my MXL mic and also used it for my guitar recently to add a little warm to it though.

I do a similar setup with an ART MPA Pro II. It's got an instrument level input, so no need for the DI for me. Soundwise, I like it quite a bit more after running the ampsims on it versus straight in. It's sort of similar to running a tube screamer pedal in that it adds some pleasant harmonics which help liven the sound up.
For harshness from AmpSims, try running the AmpSim into a tape sim, especially if you can find a tube type tape machine emulation. The other thing you can try is eq'ing out the harshness, but that's like a merry-go-round ride once you get on it.

  12. Plugging into the preamp...

By the July recording of “Revolution,” Emerick determined that he could distort the signal even more by patching Lennon and George Harrison’s guitars directly into the mixing console via direct boxes, overloading the input preamp and sending the signal into a second overloaded preamp.

“I remember walking into the control room when they were cutting that,” recalls Abbey Road engineer Ken Scott, “and there was John, Paul and George, all in the control room, all plugged in—just playing straight through the board. All of the guitar distortion was gotten just by overloading the mic amps in the desk.” As Emerick himself notes in his 2006 memoir Here, There and Everywhere, it was no mean feat: the overloaded preamps could have caused the studio’s tube-powered mixer to overheat. “I couldn’t help but think: If I was the studio manager and saw this going on, I’d fire myself.”

I tried many different AmpSim/CabSim methods. What ultimately worked for me was using Nebula for the cabinets. Either the AE cabs or the Ownhammer ones yielded results closest to what I was trying to achieve. Then I used the Wollensak Tape in the R2R set (also Nebula) afterwards followed by Acustica Gold running just a channel on it, and cutting a little on the Gold EQ hi shelf, 10K, and a 500 Hz dip.
Ultimately, I have reamped the DI's through a Marshall Mode 4/1960b or an Orange ThunderVerb using an SM57 and/or a Ribbon mic for the capture.
In either case, the Wollensak preset completely cured digital harshness to my ears.

  16. Nope.

So you use a AmpSim without a cabinet...then Nebula for cabinets.....(i have the Wollensack).
I must learn more about reamping.........
    Thanks alot !!!!!

funkytoe, yep. Most packages like Amplitube will let you turn off the cab emulations. I found Nebula cabs to respond better dynamically.
Also, I do high and lo pass filters after the emulation.
    You're welcome.

Looking at the Focusrite specifications the interface has two hiZ inputs, so a DI is not needed. :dunno:

  20. Just get a DI and you can plug into your Gold Mike to boost the signal which is too low to be heard...

because a DI is an electronic device made specifically to connect a high-output impedance, line level, unbalanced output signal to a low-impedance, microphone level, balanced input, usually via an XLR connector and XLR cable.

    Carry on, Dude!

    This is my thought too.

I'm actually doing the opposite, taking a balanced line-level signal out of the DAW into a reamping box, then I process the signal through some FX pedals and a Kemper amp, before sending it back to the DAW at line-level through the mic preamp on my interface.
