To me, it needs to be :
-above 40Hz (because most systems can't go lower AND you get more energy)

-pure sine wave, because when you saturate a sine...it is not a sub sine wave anymore ;)
That's why when you do a sub bass wobble, you need to separate sub sine wave and do a simple volume modulation, AND you can use a low pass on the rest of the bass.

Saturating a sub is nonsense, because it is not a sub anymore, generating harmonics in the "main" bass domain.
If you want to go that way, it is more a kind of saturated 808-like than a real sub to me. And it replace the whole kick "energy"

There are two options :
-sub is here-and there, so it can be mixed very low, to do a subtle "rumble" "rattling" in complement to the kick
-sub is very present all over the song, so you need to make room for it : kick with no sub, only low mids "punch", and bass low mids only

To me, a sub don't really need to be heard, but more on the "feeling" side

What's your average sub track level for a mix? (for subby electronic music)
How do you avoid sine waves from getting saturated/distorted during mastering (when cranking it up like I'm describing in last post)?
