@Tonny van den Berg 's list is great...

My new fave right now is XLN Audio XO. I don't actually use the pattern presets in any drum machine, but it does have some good ones in there, plus I really like how it presents all the samples to you. Comes with a huge library, and you can add your own stuff to it. It scans it all in once, and then figures out what sounds similar, and gives a great way of swapping out samples or finding samples that will work for what you're trying to do. Such a great concept.

I'll also add SugarBytes DrumComputer too, I like that one.. similar in ways to Microtonic. Microtonic sounds better right out of the box though but the one on the sister site doesn't appear to support all of its features. Microtonic also has a cool online component to it, and yes you can use it with the cracked version... you can very easily try out kits (and sequences, I think) other people have made and load them into Microtonic.

FXpansion Guru 2. It's a bit old but really great VST Drum Machine. Has great, easy to use step sequencer. You can even record your own patterns playing the keyboard or drum pads. Also, D16 Nepheton and Drumazon with a TR808&TR909 style sequencer. Sound great, easy to use. All three have separate outputs per drum sound so you can process the drums with other plugins easily.

    Cheers! :headbang:

Rob Papen Punch2 is very nice. Just sling some midi data at it.

Microtonic (includes Patternarium!), from the geniuses at SonicCharge.

My #2 favorite plugin of all time..

My favorite at the moment: ADSR Drum Machine.
I've tried them all, Geist 1& 2, XO Drum Machine ( which I also love) but this has everything in it that I would wish for form a drum machine...

I believe Loopmix from Audiomodern can easily become a best contender with a little ''swing'' and ''transient detection'' tweaking.

It is the only two thing it is lacking as we speak.

I'd also get a ''multi-channel output'' as part of the obvious need but that would be secondary.

Very powerful drum machine indeed but with a bit too much ''glitter'' and lacking some fundamentals.

XFER Nerve has a few, not too many, but it's a brilliant bit of software and probably the deepest of any that I know of.

I at first read sling as "sing" and became very excited at the concept! Wouldn't that be great...boom shaka shaka, boom tsssssss!

ala Vochlea Doubler. No thanks. The initial question about doing pattern work, nested inside a plugin; is not a good idea to me. But it does highlight the importance of having good MIDI collection with Drum only patterns. Then when you want to decide on a drum machine as source of sounds for your track, it is completely independent on anything but the sounds in the machine. Or trying the same pattern in a stack of machines and with Midi Transpose available to shift the drummer position around for new pattern playback like Round Robin. You cycle through the kits, not the pattern. :)

I also never like to write (and save) inside a plugin that I might not be able to open later. Multi-output is just faster if you record every drum to a separate channel, but an easier way to get stuck with work inside one of them.

I forgot about Arturia SparkLE. It has a good sound engine and many ways to manipulate sequences too.

If TAL Drum had a sequencer from Sugar Bytes Drum Computer... :)

ADSR Drum Machine has good sequencer and sampler. It is like Nerve or Geist2. XLN XO and Atlas has great sample searching functionality, but their sequencer is not powerful.

One that tends to get overlooked because of it's age is Stylus RMX from Spectrasonics. I've been using that a fair bit recently for remixing old 80's stuff and as much as I too like Microtonic, Atlas, Punch2, Spark AND Nerve, this thing seems to have groove variations that make the drums come to life a lot more!

There is an old 4 part help video from Skippy Lehmkul on You Tube worth watching if you're interested.

    ^^ That's part 2

Microtonic from sister site seemed to have a timebomb where it would load up "Bad Boy" patch...
I assume it was interfering with use, because I liked it but uninstalled it.
