I've never understood the DP DAW (in general, doesn't matter the version) - the UI is chaotic and messy for me ... yes it is game changer, but in negative meaning (for me) :)

After all these praises for DP 9, how someone will compare Cubase 8.5 with Digital performer 9.2, as they both are significantly updated?

I use both. DP is the best daw when it comes to film scoring. It was made for this, so the film scoring and MIDI features are very deep (as well as audio but I'll come back on that point later on). You can create chunks (multiple songs/cues within a single project) that you can piece altogether. That's very useful when you want to create loops, sound effects, without having to create a separate project. You can also bounce your loops so they appear in the soundbites window, and then you can drag them in your project. This chunk feature alone is one of the main reasons I almost only use DP. It makes songwriting way easier and less confusing.

However, DP is very hard to set up. There are tons of little details you must not omit (especially in the preferences menu). For months and months I had terrible performance issues with DP, and it was caused by wrong vst settings in the preferences menu (how the hell was I supposed to be aware of this anyway lol). I also had tons of crashes when editing audio (DP was crashing EVERY time I was undoing an audio edit action with the CTRL+Z command) but the 9.2 update fixed this. Speaking of audio, sometimes the countdown fucks up when I'm trying to record audio (if I set the countdown to 1 measure, it may as well count 2 measures or 1 and a half. And then again, I'm sure this is due to wrong settings in the preference menu). Aside from these annoying details I think DP is a fantastic DAW, one of the best I've used. It's great at everything (audio, midi, mixing, mastering, scoring, surround sound support). The stock plugins however are meh... The instruments aren't very interesting (except mx4, it has some nice sounds), and the effect plugins are very hard to use (they sound great tho). DP will also eat your CPU alive. 8gb of ram is the bare minimum (with a buffer size of 1024), you can lower down your buffer size to 512 if you have 16gb of ram or more. And on a final note, DP is the hardest DAW to learn. Be ready to pull your hair many times, and maybe even cry. But once you master it you'll love it. Interestingly enough it has the easiest Kontakt routing of any DAW I've ever used.

Now Cubase imo is one of the best DAWs on the market. It's super stable, light on the cpu, easy to use, looks great, the included plugins are dope. Even the lesser versions of cubase (AI, elements, artist) are damn generous for their price. However switching devices is a PITA. I'm using a USB mic and the shit I have to do to switch from my audio interface to my mic haha). It's a very versatile DAW and I reccomend it to everyone. Note that the pro version requires a dongle, DP does not. What I like the most about Cubase is it's workflow. it's very easy to set up an instrument, to record, edit audio, the mixing console is a thing of beauty. I have nothing really negative to say about Cubase, it's pretty much the perfect DAW for any kind of music.

So it's really up to you. I love both, but I prefer DP (it's my favourite DAW and I really can't imagine my life as a musician without it). However I almost never reccomend it to anyone due to it's learning curve, most people are used to modern daws and will probably give up on DP after a few hours. Cubase is more stable than DP and easier to use, I'd highly recommend it over DP for audio recording and hassle-free songwriting.

I've found a way to fix the count-off bug. Finally, an (almost) glitch free DP!

    solution.jpg

Just uncheck Automatic Plugin Latency Compensation.

It's kinda interesting to notice that all the bugs that I've experienced with DP were not bugs at all, just wrong option choices.

    Hi guys

I installed MOTU Digital Performer v9.02 Incl Keygen-R2R on windows 7 x64. Everything went well during installation.

After installation, since I have not seen any desktop icon from DP9, I headed to the location "program files (x64)" folder and click on the file DP.exe. Then appeared the following message: "DP.exe stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Close the program" Afther this, I went in the "program files (x86)" folder clicked on the other DP.exe icon (32bits) and the program started normally. So, is this version 32bit only?

    That's really awkward!!!

    Thank you for clarifying this!

No DP9 is also 64bit. You should download the installer from motu's website and use the keygen provided in R2R's version.

    Thanks Ferdinand.

I did what u suggest: I downloaded the installer direct from MOTU website. after installing these "new one", It automatically kept the same serial and user ID from the previous installation. And I found that it is hybrid: The program was installed in two diferent places: x64 bits into C:\Program Files\MOTU\Digital Performer 9.0 and x32 bits into C:\Program Files (x86)\MOTU\Digital Performer 9.0. However, the problem persists: I can not start the 64-bit version!!!

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc000001d). Click OK to close the application.

    OK

Ok, now I'm really worried. I would really like to give a try to this one... what a pity!

That's weird. You should go on Motu Nation and tell them about your problem (tell them you're trying out the demo, James Steele is fucking paranoid about piracy, for him it's a crime worse than murder).

"It automatically kept the same serial and user ID from the previous installation"

Yup that's normal, it's the same with almost any piece of software, the licenses are stored in the %appdata% folder. Uninstalling a software won't delete your license.

I really like DP on the Mac when it is running through Quartz or whatever the OSX render engine is now called. The GUI on the PC side though is still a little touch and go and edit points that I can easily manipulate on the Mac are impossible to grab on the PC.

MOTU is overdue for a GUI refresh but it is and has always been a really well performing platform even if it is a little long in the tooth in how it handles pre-gen and output and reroutes.

You're right. Digital Performer 9.1 is OUT. I already installed it. I think it is a mistake to say DP 9.02.

Alright so here's my opinion so far. The performance is WAYYYYYY better, this is actually the first stable version of DP on Windows. Some VST options were removed (about the rendering I guess, this is perhaps due to their new Pre-Gen engine). The projects open way faster too. This is one of their best updates since version 8.

Because DP is very stable on Mac.

Anyway so far it's going pretty well, it haven't crashed since I wrote my last post. Maybe I should tweak the options a bit.
