Who cares about music on stuff like "Deadliest Catch" etc? They could easily replace it with free to use music and such reality tv shows would still maintain most of their viewership.

Christian Henson makes bland directionless music with no memorable melodies as do most of these soundtrack "composers". He sounds so desperate in this video cos' deep inside he understands how generic his compositions are and how replaceable he and similar people are.

The man has his own voice and has his own opinions. It seems very close minded of you to judge him and call his music generic. I see you are a newbie anyway.
I believe the real problem is society's socialistic view on how everyone should be the same. I was taught as a composer to be original.

I'm surprised Discovery even had in-house composers. If you make cheap fast food doesn't make sense to use quality ingredients.
Personally I'm not going to go hungry even if Discovery collapsed. Never a good idea to put your eggs in one basket in this game.

EDIT: just realised all the food references I'm making. Think I'm hungry lol

No need to refute. He said "Christian Henson makes," not "In my opinion Christian Henson makes" bland music. I'm pretty sure some people like his stuff. I have the opinion that blanket statements are immature. OTOH, prove his music IS bad, you can't.
And why does music HAVE to have memorable melodies? To many people, "The Right of Spring" has no memorable melodies, but it is considered a masterpiece. I'm not trying to start a feud, just saying it isn't a fair statement.

Something dosesn't make sense in what he's saying. If a TV programme uses (non-free) library music they have to pay royalties for that. Maybe he has a 'Jesus Complex' because of his name.

    ok then...

"Christian Henson is a multi nominated (including Ivor Novello and World Soundtrack Awards) and multi award-winning composer. With over 45 films to his name, he has proved to be a prodigious and versatile force within the UK film industry."

Oh, and those computer games Alien Isolation & Assassins Creed

If it's so easy then crack on. Post the results here... I'm sure we won't hear anything however. But I'm happy to be wrong.

    Ok, he's no good. Fine.
He won awards for nothing, "best bland score". Composed for video games, because everyone can do it... they just phoned him because "the guys on AS were busy writing bangers". His family are composers, that also won stuff by mistake. He learnt nothing from them. He runs a reasonable known music company, you might have heard of it?

But no, easier to slam on a professional who is trying to defend... guess who? You know, most people on here.... musicians.

Buy yeah, he's desperate and writes bland music. This board, jesus.

    Ok, I'll bite.
Music is a divine art form which is used to communicate where words fail. Composers have composed music to advance humanity's understanding of the arts and the human condition. They had something to say, some ideals to express like freedom, liberty, universal brotherhood, etc.
Unless you have something unique to say that hasn't been told by any, you shouldn't touch music.
This is my personal belief so no one should care hence I am no gate-keeper.

I don't feel especially sorry for multi-millionaire Christian Henson crying poverty, "on behalf of all music"(!) It comes across as entitled butthurt at being swindled out of pennies by the greedy capitalists who employ him. If he was rly worried about the terms or about other musicians, just create a union or cartel or smthn. Or join one.

So if he had less money and was struggling it would be a fair point he was making?
Do you think these steps he has highlighted are good for musicians of today/future?

Just seems you are jealous of success and wealth, weird. I'm sure he is part of a union being in the industry for 20+ years.

It would be tautologous to say this. Since, y'know. Opinions.

I'm not sure that he can claim to speak "for the love of music and musicians" (!), when he's actually complaining about his contracts being renegotiated. By how much, he doesn't say. Given how wealthy he is; astronomic > slightly less than astronomic. It's just capitalism. Hire a lawyer, bargain collectively etcs if you feel that music is somehow being short-changed by cents on the dollar.

But he isn't affected by this financially as he isn't composing for Discovery? Or to my knowledge he isn't.

It's about them starting something that could potentially become a standard. A bad one.
    Not money. Not him. Us

I understood that he is. A buddy told me he and Paul worked on Discovery's Project Earth.

It's already a "standard" because capitalism. If producers / showrunners want to use library music, they've always been able to do that. Will their audience care / notice? I guess they'll find out. Nothing to see here. Well, other than an old man shouting at a cloud.

I'd be interested to hear what rate the musicians used to create Spitfire libs are on, though; how their royalties (if they're paid them) compare.

Not sure he is, anyway it's not about his money is my point. Something people seem to be missing.
It's not a standard??? Re-negotiating contracts or you music is pulled? That's the whole issue... it's not a standard.

But yeah, fuck it. Who cares. It's only music.

They do get paid, normal daily rate as any musician asks for in London. And they get royalties.
Compare to what though? His/SA earnings?
