I saw this desk recently, and it has the rails underneath. I searched around but couldn't find anything. Are they regular shelf rails flipped on their side or are there specific rails of this kind? They seem low quite low profile and the edges don't look like regular rails. Also, not sure regular rails were designed to hold the ways this way without bending/warping, which I presume is not the case on this desk seeing that it costs about $2k!

WOuldn't they warp with the weight when horizontal though? And on a $2k desk that obviously wouldn't be acceptable to paying customers. Which is why I presume these were something different/better?!

Have you checked if the manufacturer provides a maximum load weight for the tray?

the nylon glides rest inside a set of metal rails. the glides allow the rails to slide over each other thereby nesting or extending they are heavy duty typically used in filing cabinets that hold a hundred pounds of paper or more. They came in various sizes and weight capacities.

these use ball bearings rather than the nylon glides

these are rated for 200 lbs per pair - 29$

yes and its probably some sort of faux wood made of sawdust and glue with a veneer to give it grain. the margin is incredible on "specialized" furniture.

Cabinet grade plywood would be cheaper and stronger I beleive its called birch plywood in Europe, fine grain and bereft of voids inside the plys, its good shit...

the keyboard tray sliding under the main desktop surface doesn't do anything to add space for other stuff. It is just something that might break. If the idea is to hide a synth there, the cutout above it isn't hiding anything. You will still want to buy a cover for whatever synth you put there. Most producer desks have 2 racks in front of you, this one has one. And on the sides, other versions can hold probably 4-6 more rack units (combined).

It's each to their own. It has nothing to do with adding space for rack gear. It is there as a solution to accommodate an 88 key controller keyboard/piano, which is something I am looking for.

Sure it does. The amount of storage space, trays, shelf, cable management, build quality and materials, color options and overall appearance, price, are all aspects of a desk when you are looking at which one to buy. There are probably a few more.

In which case, 2 grand is crazy for that desk. You mentioned the price twice in your comments, because that number does not make sense.

this is how they hide ironing boards, think you could do the same with a keyboard...

Not sure what this is about. I have zero interest in buying this desk nor care what features it has or what it can accommodate. I am just interested in the keyboard rails as I am potentially wanting to implement something similar into a desk I am gonna design and build for myself.

Tried the nylon glides type first not good they cracked, then tried the Rails with metal ball bearings, the bearings fell out gradually, again not durable with extensive use.

Sounds like the rails were not spec'd for the weight used with them. anything will fail if its not rated for the use case you place upon it.
thats why its a good idea to get the specifications before purchasing.

I have never had a rail system fail in decades of use.
