i've been monkeying around with all of the most recent versions of kontakt by r2r, bobdule and vkdanilov, and i can't make any of them work on my laptop. i remember back a few years ago when you could just install it and run a keygen, and bam - it just worked the way it was supposed to.

so what was the last version that actually worked for everyone without a bunch of monkeying around? no stupid error messages about uninstalled libraries and other crap? i'm hoping there's one in the kontakt 7 realm because a lo of the libraries i have need at least kontakt 7.2 i believe.

If you are having this much trouble with *all of them*, you might want to do some serious cleanup of your system disk.

In my humble experience, all of bobdule's version do work like magic.

i upgraded to windows 11 pro about a month ago, so its a pretty clean install of windows. i used revo uninstaller pro after every failed install of kontakt. the only thing i can think of that might be a problem is that in every case, i have been testing it by pulling up kontakt in standalone mode. should i be pulling it up as a vst first?

thank you for your replies. i am quite aware that these work for many people. unfortunately, i have tried them all and they do not work for me. maybe if i could find a step by step set of instructions written for a five-year old in good english, i might have better luck. clearly, i must be doing something wrong. for example, there was a fantastic, step by step set of install instructions posted here for the r2r release of uvi falcon 3. it made everything easy. i was very grateful for that thread.

As others said: they all should work.

But... have you got Kontakt 8 Player set up? That can interfere if it comes from Native Access (if you've got some libraries installed that way). The way around it is to change the plugin id after installation (I'm basing this on vkdanilov's portable version, but I'd imagine bobdule should work the same).

So if this is the case... tweak the settings.ini in your plugin folder where you installed the plugin (or symlink) to something like:

    Code:
    [Kontakt 8 Portable.vst3]
    PluginId=NiP8
    PluginName=Kontakt8Portable

I have found the portable versions to be less hassle free, specifically 8.3.0 I use.

That seems to have no trouble with even the newer banks also

i do not have kontakt 8 player installed. although i have been considering trying that as a last resort. but there are a lot of libraries that i would like to use that don't work with the player version of kontakt.

All of them just work OK from all the Teams including Portable.
Do you have Microsoft C++ Redistributable packages installed?
Also check out this thread also regarding vc-redist and graphics issues:

I remember in older versions like v6 and prior it had a message during installation that said to do it the way you have been.
I'm not sure that it matters anymore. Once I have the plugin version working, I usually delete the standalone because I never use it anyway. I always firewall it and Native Access in before using it; again not sure if it matters.

But when you have problems with every release you have tried and none work, usually the problem is on the local machine. Anything prior to Kontakt v6.70 is not listed as compatible with Windows 11, but any newer version should work.

Do you have Native Access installed, and have not removed it when trying different versions? That may be something to consider.

What error messages are you getting from it, or what part of the installation does not work?

Ok, just to make sure, this is the step by step installation order for the portable 8.4.1 vkDanilov version, but the process is the same for all of them (and you can run for instance 6,7 and 8 side by side for whatever reason).

    • Get the portable
    • Extract it where ever you want it to live (it's around 2GB all in all, with 3GB required to extract), say "C:\Kontakt8Portable"
    • There might be extra paths inside it, just move things around so it'll look something like this:
    • Run KontaktPortable_v841.exe, just accept the defaults, and the directory should look like this now:[IMG]
    • Test the standalone first, to see that you've extracted everything ok, it's "Kontakt 8\x64\" and run "Kontakt.exe", if that's OK go ahead to set up the plugin
    • Run the extracted "Install.exe", select what you want I just do the VST3 version, but YMMV [IMG]
    • (Optional) Create and edit the settings.ini if you need to (as explained upthread), for instance mine looks like: [IMG]
    • You're done, now restart your DAW and rescan plugins
    • Now you can delete KontaktPortable_v841.exe

error messages: the #1 issue is that after installing, i bring it up in standalone, and it shows as being a demo, and it tells me to purchase a license. that's not really an error message, but it is a strong indication that the installation was unsuccessful, and yes, i am disconnected from the internet while i am installing and testing. and windows defender is totally disabled through group policy. i do have malwarebytes installed, but it is very good at not flagging anything from the sister site.

beyond that, for every library that i have tried to use, i get the message that the library is not installed. but what i have noticed is that most of the libraries i have downloaded from the sister site do not have installation routines or even basic instructions and i am not clear on where the various components are supposed to go. i believe that this is one of my major problems.

i have gotten one library to somewhat work, but not the way it is supposed to. only parts of it worked. and again kontakt still shows that it is in demo mode.

i did post a question in the "Active Members Only: Kontakt Problems with Windows..." thread with screenshots over a month ago, and never received any replies, so i very much appreciate everyone who has replied here.

this is my post from that thread, which may answer some of what you are asking.

thank you so much. i will give this a shot. this is very helpful. one question regarding the portable version: am i correctly understanding that the libraries must reside on a separate drive with this version?

Someone stated it before...but yes,i m convinced theres something wrong with your system.
from the first release of K7 up till K8 the latest release,i ve tryed all of them.R2R BobDule and Portable.and they all worked fine without any hassle.
Also, theres not much difficult hassle when it comes to installaltion.

concerning the ``library not installed`` mode you talk about. you need to replace the nativeaccess xml when you install kontakt.
    you can get it here:
    https://api.native-instruments.com/static/phints/NativeAccess.xml
follow link, right click and save as.

Well, best of luck.and keep your system clean

It doesn't matter where you put your libs. Ones that are designed to be in the library view are added through "Add library", and those libs that don't have .nicht are visible in the "File" menu, just fire up an instrument without any hassle and you are good to go. I personally highly dislike the Library view so I use ALL libraries on File menu tab, although you still have to "Add" those that are with .nicht but then you can use either one. In K8 you have to switch to "Classic view" to get that K6 library list though.

Yeah, and one more thing, do batch resave and in K8 you can only do that in Standalone so you might need to keep that too

Update: after reading your message to the other thread I see you are doing it wrong. Leave .nicht be, don't click it or double click it, it is instrument you need to fire up (I take it by default you haven't reassigned it to some other program) the .nki file

The libraries can live where ever you want, in multiple drives and directories if you wish. After installation run the library manager from the sidebar:

So lets say you have libraries in E:\libraries\kontakt and X:\stuff\dl\kontaktlibraries, so in the manager, for each of the locations click ADD, then navigate to E:\libraries\kontakt first and select it, then choose Find libraries in selected folder, let it scan and when done, close the scan window. Now ADD the next location, scan. Then remember to click SAVE before closing the Library Manager. You have to restart Kontakt every time you change libraries so it's easier to do this in standalone.

This applies to the vkDanilov portable version, but all of them are pretty similar in regards to library location. Native Access is not necessary, but you can have it if you need it, but remember to change the plugin ID with settings.ini if you do and you'll be alright.
