I've been a full time musician for over 35 years, but much harder now to make a living than it once was. Most of my income is remote (online) work now. Some months I do OK, but mostly it's very difficult to pay bills and eat etc. Regardless of the money, it's still the best job in the world to me.

 

Making money from art has always been difficult. Few of the artists were able to earn a lot of money and most of the artists did not have this achievement. Some things are in the hand of the artist and his abilities, and part of it is luck that you accidentally find yourself on the path of growth and development and benefiting from the investments of capitalists.
For example, making 5 or 6 songs and neglecting the artistic atmosphere and musical taste of your time and not using much talent in making songs will lead to the lack of acceptance by listeners and investors. I don't want to make fun of the composer of this song, because all artists have value and respect at any level, but finally, one should think a little about different aspects of artistic work and look at music more artistically.

Maybe, but the important issue is the money. Before producing any work and spending time on it, artists should look at their works like an investor. They should ask: Does this work sell or not? If you doesn't, don't invest on it. The ways of making money for the artwork should be one of the priorities of every artist in this economic situation. Many artists have the potential to make money, but due to personal reasons (like wrong ideas and beliefs about art and the spirit of art) and lack of knowledge of the market and listeners' tastes, or cooperation with people with little knowledge, they deprive themselves of the opportunity to make money.
Many artists are just looking to show their works to a number of friends and acquaintances and in this way be happy to continue their own path. But you can't make money from this kind of view of art.

 

The only time it seems I received money was because I had invested it upstream on a physical vinyl project in 2021 at the end of COVID just before the huge boom in production costs. raw material and increased water and electricity everywhere on the planet, I invested about 2000 euros including mastering for 300 vinyls in 180g including 100 vinyl which was marbled collector type, I received about 1800 euros euros of resale on this investment counting personal sales, donations to friends, sales to the vinyl shop, etc etc..

I never had the intention of winning or generating profit on this press, but having considering that I was at a loss of 200 euros made me think twice about reinvesting in such a project especially since all this requires logistics and organization all the same enormous behind, the packages, the shipping costs, the shipments in short I I felt like a real little entrepreneur, after all, that's what an independent label is, right ?

Being a niche music trend, vinyl frankly sold like hot cakes in 3 months I no longer had any in stock my only regret and probably having seen too big too quickly, I will never do it again of 180gram and I don't think I'll do a collector's item again unless one day I receive a really large sum to invest in my label.

aside from that I receive small remuneration through bandcamp but that's in the realm of really occasional j I have 90% of the label's works and compilations which are free donations, i.e. 80% of people download without paying 1cts but I sometimes have very nice surprises where people spend 20 or 40 euros for the complete discography, that comforts me with the people who realize what the investment of such work is and to offer so much work. Overall I never wanted money or notoriety I'm just happy today to have a small name in underground electronic music and to have succeeded in creating an entity that is rather respectful of both the artists and the content that it offers.

In the end I would recommend to anyone to do things for you first and not to expect any monetary reward behind, if you vibrate in what you do, other people will also vibrate, this is the power of resonance.

I saw my vinyl played in a teknival in Albania on a big facade by the sea with my feet in the sand and for me it was the best reward ever, and every time I hear a friend play it or strangers discovering it is a source of unspeakable happiness, because yes, music is just a story of frequency of grooves of emotions and above all of sharing and humanity.
