I am always making notes in the various apps I use I also make OBS video recordings of me demonstrating the thing I want to make a note of with an audio narrative that way somewhere down the road when I have forgotten how to do a thing, I just watch the video of me doing it.

 

Not that kind of note. I meant musical notes. I corrected the title to clear up this little misunderstanding.

I hate notes. Notes killed my family, ran over my dog and bullied me at school. They've gotten away 'till now, mostly because the system is run by corrupt musicians, but it wont last forever.
Justice will be served.

I was taught to read music at a young age. I like to play by ear but I am very happy to be able to read music, especially when there is a lot of music to consider.
I can only recommend that people learn this tool.

 

I'm not making any favours for myself by attempting a serious reply here, but here goes (my sanity, at least):

Music exists without notes by default, like birdsong. It can be notated to turn it into notes if one so chooses. The same can be applied (a technique I learned by copying Zappa) to any spoken phrase, or an entire conversation. There's even a name for it in German (because of course): sprechgesang. Does that mean that any everyday conversation is music? Just because it can be notated? And of course, is birdsong music? A lot of industrial equipment on full blast have defined set of rhythms, harmonies and melodies. I bet the dial-up modem connection sound could be abstracted into musical notation as well, it's certainly been sampled a lot.

But notes can be a handy abstraction over a set of predefined frequencies arranged into music. Do Re Mi or C D E are certainly easier labels for notes than anything that Neo-Riemannians have shat out.

 

I wholeheartedly agree...the only good note is a dead note...but not until I have my way with them, haha! Have you ever noticed, for instance how a C2, after having a bit of fun with it, jumps octaves and squeals at very much higher frequency than it started out like in it's natural state, very much as a very fast glide, up and higher up until it's pathetic scream is far above human hearing and comprehension? My hellhound loses interest past 65 kHz and looks at me to do another.

 

It's an interesting time. The newcomers have ignored all the principles of music and want to completely eradicate the only thing we have inherited from the past, the notes. If this is eradicated, then one can do whatever they want with ease.

I'm actually (even though we disagree on metaphysics of music most likely) with you here: music written down is important as fuck. For sure we'd be missing a hell of a lot of music if it wasn't written down, yes, as notes. Of course we're missing a lot of nuances that are not written down. But still, to have a system where we can write down something, and somebody can replicate it without hearing it first is priceless.

And yes, we have lost a lot of music along the stream of time. Because even now a lot of tradition is passed down orally and with show and tell, and sometimes traditions stop and their teachings (good and bad) vanish into thin air.

Anyhow, notes and other written down stuff is not music unless transformed into sound first. How that happens is a different question altogether.

Next up: "do you like letters?" Because I feel we could have the same exact discussion about letters, phonetics, and spellings. Same fucking thing.

Sadly, they've obviously got no social life or friends in the real world, it's a really pathetic cry for attention.
