For me it would take about a year, but if i find myself using it all the time or it finds itself a spot in one of my session templates I would buy it on the spot. With bundles like waves it was a bit harder i had to wait for sales and then upgrade slowly till i got every thing I needed. Glad to say I'm fully crack free now, but liberated software is a great way to discover new tools. The fact is some tools are amazing but you may end up never using them so its best to try before you buy

I've bought Komplete 9 Ultimate (didn't think 10 was worth the upgrade tbh), Kore 2, Sinevibes, Synthsquad, Dune 1, Numerology, Zebra 2, Diva, and some others after trying the warez versions for a couple months.
An interesting fact about me...I've only ever bought things that I've used the warez version of first.

 

I'll definitely buy once I determine their value. Too often though, I wanted a library (for instance) only to get the Warez and determine later "thank God, I didn't waste $300 on that bullshit!". If buying it was the only option, I would be a truck driver for a living because I, either couldn't afford the libraries and/or would have wasted thousands of dollars on utterly useless and outdated sounds... in spite of my family... and that is something the manufacturer's could care less about.

The only people that can actually afford the libraries are the ones making a living with it... and I know many industry composers and producers that get it for free... in exchange for endorsements.

I am starting to get off from warez software... almost a half of my plugins is legal and I am happy with it till the end of this year I will legit totaly;)

This is an interesting article I must add that even though this is not a plugin it is related to warez software.

I used Cubase 5.1 from Air for about a year and to be honest I bought Cubase 7 since I fell in love with it. In all my time I knew 1 month trial would not be enough to fully grasp what Cubase had to offer as a DAW. It is a shame that Steinberg does not realize this. I think if they stopped with the F&*(ing dongle and let people use the software warezed or not, they would gain more market share.

I thank Air a lot for cracking the heck out of it and Steinburg should also. I mean I am sure I am not the only one that bought it after they were really about to use it.

I do not think warezed software hurts companies since I like many here have stated they had purchased the software after really using it.

I re-started some months ago to buy music-software again.

When Apple bought Emagic's Logic (I was a legit user then) and stopped to make it for Windows - I stopped buying software..
And now, after reading some articles about this topic, I started again to buy music-software.
Now waiting for Omnisphere 2 - had Atmosphere and using Omnisphere for almost every track, so it makes sense to buy it.

In general:
When I buy music software, I keep an eye on how the company treats their products AND their costumers.
I wont buy anthing with "complicated" protection. Logic had the dongle when I used it - so then I used the one from oxygen for a while.
It's not software related, but anyway: I had a NI audio-interface, but NI coudn't make a decent driver for Win7. conclusion: I bought a RME audio interface and I'm more than happy I did.

Before it descends into a political debate, I'd like to say that I do indeed purchase software I am fond of.
The opportunity to demo a fully functioning copy of a plugin, etc. is greatly appreciated.
If I'm impressed, and foresee actually using it, I'll lay out the cash for the legit version.

I'm not a software/plugin hoarder, so I uninstall and delete a great deal more than I purchase.

Have I ever "demoed" a product for an arguably unreasonable amount of time? Well, certainly. Oops.

 

When it comes to VST's I've been completely using free ones for about a year and I must say that it feels good to be legit. There are a lot of great free stuff out there, you can find almost anything. Now in terms of VSTi's I continue to use warez because there are few free ones and they can't touch the quality of paid ones, specially those which are sample based.

Yeah, let's hit the pause button the overtly partisan posts, because this is an interesting thread.

I buy a lot of if most of everything I use. Things like NI Komplete, Ableton, Logic, Arturia, Audio Damage, Valhalla etc etc. Putting away money for others. I also come from a time of hardware, when you would mow lawns and do menial tasks all year to buy a synth etc. I see the value in it. But as mentioned above, I have been saved from some awful software by trying out some first that were just god awful. And I also have some plugs that if I use just once or twice in a year, (say some noise reduction tool etc), there is no way I am paying the egregious msrp. All that said, I often find running the k's to be easier in the long run. Crappy copy protection by companies like Arturia etc have made it easier for me to run the k's of it then the Collection i PAID for. I hate iLoks, a producing partner of mine was visiting my city lately, brought the wrong iLok, he pays for the "no down time" thing etc... well he called them, and some idiot there reported his ilok as "stolen" with some inadvertent keystroke, and he has spent the last three days on the phone with the individual companies to get his stuff reauthorized (from Avid, to McDSP to Soundtoys etc...), and this was not his fault, and he pays for the "additional" service from iLok... Not sure exactly the specifics, but that is ridiculous. Honestly, a lot of stuff I wouldn't have known about I find out and test here, and I am finding an increasing number of smarter people with intelligent feedback on how the stuff works that beats some of the info I get from other sites. I am also happy to see some smarter devs actually popping up on AZ and making a more polite comment then I would, and then try and steer people over to their own site if they like it. Like Luca from Audiority. That is cool. And I respect them, and plan on buying some of their stuff because what I experienced with it was interesting.
We can't all afford to drop serious money on some of the expensive products, as most are hobbyists, or pro's basically making it by the hair of their chin,.. but I also see a lot here as icing on the cake. Most of it is completely unnecessary to 90% of the downloaders. Most of us are digital hoarders. Who really needs another 5200 Massive presets? Have you not spent the time to learn it yourself, like some of us did when all we had was one or 2 crap synths, perhaps a sampler, a 4 track, and one crap multifx unit, ALL OF WHICH SEEMED LIKE A KINGDOM at the time.....?

Its fun and inspiring to check out new stuff, granted. But we can get 92% of the sonic way there with a sub $200 us DAW. The compressor in Logic is fine, that's certainly not the part of the equation that is going to catapult you to being a millionaire.

It's a gray area, but i think or hope the growing trend is towards learning with this stuff, evaluation, and ultimately doing the right thing when you can. But karma can be a bitch.
