I started playing drums on the Roland td-17kv about a year and a half ago, but I haven't really enjoyed it because of how everything sounds and how little the pads are.

I've been researching the VAD506 since I like acoustic sizes but like having a module, so the 506 looks to be a decent option (already settled)

Therefore, I want to know if the noises on the Td-27 module are better. Do you recommend another option, such as superior drummer?

 

I recommend real drums.

 

I have a cheap, portable Roland kit with crap sounds.
I hook it up to Addictive Drums 2.
There's a pull-down menu that lets you select your kit in AD2.

 

According to this video

the 27 seems to sound a bit better than the 17, it also has more connections.
In terms of sound, the question is what do you want to do/have? For just playing and having a useful sound, the 27 is easier to handle. If you want to shape the sounds more detailed or create your own sounds, a software is much better (but you'll need to learn how to operate the software and making good drum sounds takes pretty long).

 

It's a whole new can of worms for many people, e.g. skill levels, neighbours, microphones, room setup, etc. I always start with midi drums, and then I can send a rough mix to a pro drummer buddy if I need it. I've actually got pretty good on Maschine, and if I slow the tempo I can create some nice drum patterns, but yeah it's best to leave it to the experts

 

I have a TD17KXV, the internal sounds are crap yeah. It's way better with Superior Drummer etc, if you can get it to work well without a lot of latency. I had it working pretty well with a 2012 MacBook Pro but when I switched the setup to a 2019 iMac it wasn't as good and I went back to acoustic drums as a result. It was fun for a while on the MBP, I was blending the internal sounds with a Bonham kit, felt pretty great actually.

 

I use my TD9 with Superior Drummer. The built-in kits are really bad lol.
