I'm just going to repeat three valid points said here by others:
1. We can't ignore most GearSlutz users are men so there's no sexism intended at all
2. We can't ignore either that slut is and has been mostly used as an insult to women

3. And the last thing we can't ignore. Those topics are getting more and more polarized in the last years. Many nice people are sick of it and falling in the extremes. I partially am, as you can read in my first post. Some months ago I pretty much was. Then realized no extreme is good and I'm trying to return to being as moderate as I can.

But it's not easy these days. In some environments is almost impossible. Polarization snowballs a lot. Like a delay with a feedback on amphetamines.

"audiosex" might contain an oversexualized reference, but porn or puberty is not a political problem.

the problem begins when things are beeing compared to women (or men, or gay people, or relative foreigners) and that includes when the connotation is positive.

 

it would be interesting to see the reactions when a group of females, who want to discuss the gear addiction of their husbands, would open a forum named gearwankers.

Im wondering if somebody can clue me in here. In the UK it is absolutely the case that slut is used often in a non gendered and non sexualised ways and simply refers to indulging in excess in certain contexts, a real slut for something.... There's places called eggslut etc. Is this the same in the US? I believe this is just fact, a linguistic truth that in certain contexts "slut" doesn't refer the sexual promiscuity of women.

If this is true then you couldn't be offended because surely language depends on the context. It never even crossed my mind that Gearslutz (not even spelled correctly) is denigrating to women in anyway, whether you like the name or not is a just a matter of opinion.

 

And there is also this bizarre line of reasoning that "its not professional" I can't refer to it in classes etc. Why should it be professional, it is and has always been an informal thing? Why would you infantilise your students like that?
