Normally, yes. The pumping effect isn't that popular anymore because nowadays there are enough tools for multiband sidechain (like Cableguys Volumeshaper 6, part of Shaperbox 2). Which means, you can heavily sidechain the low-end to the kick while hardly doing anything with the high-end. So you won't really hear it but it's there. And the synth itself still sounds full. That said, if your lead is a high topline with nothing going on in the low-end, eq'ing that part would be enough in most cases. So it depends on the sound itself. If you're searching for a sweetspot between low-end and high-end for a lead synth, start with 150/200 hz.
