Every DAW provides the envelopes of volume and mute for automation. But I have no idea what difference they are.
    Can anybody explain this?

With volume envelope you can automate volume level up & down all through the track, make curves, fades etc...
With mute envelope you just automate certain parts of the track to be muted (sound off)

What he said. Think of the mute automation as a "untouched volume (non muted)"/"zero volume (muted)" switch. Only two possibilities.

And if you fancy you can mark @playtime 's answer as "best answer". Cool but overlooked forum feature.

some DAWs treat muted tracks as offline, so it might theoretically lower processing load if tracks/items are muted
