UNIMPORTANT THINGS I USED TO GET WRONG, by UBK
We're all human, we all make mistakes, we all get things wrong.
Here are a couple of things that I used to get wrong. Somewhere along the way, people pointed it out to me and I figured what the heck, might as well get it right.
I present this list to you now, in case a) you're getting it wrong, b) you didn't know it, and c) you want to do something about it.
You might not care, and that's cool too. But knowledge is power, and it's only cool to break rules if you actually know you're breaking a rule.
1) It's dB, not db. The 'B' in decibel is for Bell, which is the name of the company (Bell Labs) that cooked up this ingenious and confusing way of expressing a mathematical relationship. While internet forums might have you believe the dB is synonymous with Sound Pressure Levels (SPL), it is not, in fact the decibel doesn't have anything to do with sound per se. The decibel is a way of expressing the relationship of one aspect of a physical quantity to another, specifically, a ratio of either 10:1 or √10:1. Since sound and the perception of volume behave/respond in that logarithmic manner, the dB works to describe it... but it's not limited to that particular case or application.
2) It's Hz, not hz. Again, it's capitalized because it comes from a name, specifically Henrich Hertz. Interestingly, Heinrich didn't actually have anything to do with the realization that a sound's pitch is a function of the number of times per second it's oscillating the pressure of air, but the phenomenon was named in his honor by a commission that also had nothing to do with that discovery. To round out the irony, if you actually write out hertz, as in "60 hertz", you don't capitalize it. The sheer arbitrariness of this entire story is a sure sign that I don't make these rules, I just report them.
