I'm missing a good few teeth these days to the extent that I only have one pair of molars on each side that I can chew with. All the others are missing their "chewing partner". And one of the working ones has been repaired so many times now it will fail completely at some point. Maybe it will help me lose weight...

The products pushed by the dental industry of America are ALL acidic to the consumers mouth. The more imbalanced the pH of the mouth, the more of a playground for disease it becomes. Use a mouthwash that is alkaline and use a reguler tooth paste with no special crap in it...your gum inflammation will decrease over time and then be gone after a while. Your teeth will thank you. Also, flossing is great but NOT when you hit the gum itself, so always stop before reaching the gum. Water picking is fine but only if you use distilled water as regular water contains bacteria that will be forced into the pockets around the teeth and only use a moderate speed setting and never full blast. Do all that and reduce or eliminate processed foods from your diet and BOOM, a healthy mouth again! FU to the dental industry! :welcome:

I'm 66 and still have all of my teeth. I don't eat candy and I don't add sugar to tea or coffee. I don't drink any soda type drinks either. I get a dental checkup every 12 months and haven't had any work done to my teeth in nearly 25 years. My dentist makes very little profit from me. He's never suggested I see the hygienist either.
My teeth aren't bright white but they are very straight.

The problem is the wrong measures that are paid for and the important ones for which the money is then missing
I wish I could sketch then I could sketch really evil cartoons how this works:
If we come back to the old woman, she is really ill due to wrong nutrition, hence the broken teeth and her dried-out-orange look. But instead of treating the underlying disease, the teeth are replaced for 10 times as much money as a good diabetes treatment would cost, so that she can take the all new teeth to her grave in a few months.

My father is 94, he still has all his teeth and ate candy and everything unhealthy. He didn't look after his teeth much either, as he grew up at the end of WWII.
On the other hand my mother lost all her teeth at the age of 38 (after she gave birth to my younger brother). The underlying conditions were the same.

Diet and care are only a small part of the equation. Many women, including my mother, lose their teeth due to a massive hormonal change during the menopause, for example. Of course, genetic factors also play a major role.

Our own example does not play a role in statistics, because it's about great numbers. Medicine is an empirical science, so differentiated studies on the reasons for such events are so important, but not the individual case.
The idea that there is a simple one dimensional solution for complex problems is te mpting but
    usually misleading.

Good point. :wink:And yes, If there is too much fouride in the water you'll loose your teeth either. :)

Where I live, the drinking water is so over-treated that it contains practically no ions. All the necessary ions (iodides, flourides) have to be added artificially even though they were abundant in the spring water. I guess that's called over-regulation. The Germans love to over-regulate.

A lot more people would have lost their teeth at younger ages if public drinking water was not fluoridated. It's not as important in todays society, since most people take much better care of their teeth now than 60-70 years ago, but it it definitely still has a positive effect. Should be noted that fluoridation of drinking water is only necessary where there's not much fluoride in the ground water to begin with. In many places where the groundwater has high levels of fluoride they need to remove some of it to bring the levels down to 0.5-1.5mg/l.

If I was American, I most likely would have lost a couple of teeth already. Public health care granted me access to dentists, which saved a couple of my teeth from falling out.

The high popularity of sugary foodys and drinks in the US might also explain your statistic.

I would encourage everyone to take good care of their teeth. Even if you have access to a dentist who can provide dental fillings and prolong the life of your caries infested teeth, the fillings are not ideal snd come with their own problems.

Tooth decay causes a lot of systemic issues in the body and is even associated with heart disease and a significant higher chance of developing dementia due to chronic bacterial infection and corresponding inflammation

if women don't take prenatal vitamins, the fetus can derive sustenance from the mother, including pulling calcium for skeletal development, causing weak teeth.

    You mean the antibiotic?

I have rarely taken antibiotics in my life, so I have not experienced this issue.

My guess: antibiotics kill the good bacteria inside the mouth and upper respiratory tract. The good bacteria are needed to keep the bad bacteria in check and to facilitate a good environment for digestion.

Most antibiotics don't differentiate between good and bad bacteria, they kill off all of them. Some of the bad bacteria stains are most likely to survive and adapt, so that after some time the microbiota inside the mouth has changed to the worse, with bad bacteria dominating. From my experience, you can literally taste it in the mouth when there is a surplus of bad bacteria. And the same bacteria can attack your heart and lungs, since they travel through the body.

My dentist recommended me to take some special probiotics for the mouth, which contain the good bacteria strains. A diet that is beneficial for the gut microbiota will also help, since it will also increase the good bacteria in the mouth.

Even if your dental issues are caused by antibiotics or another issue, keeping sugar to the minimum is still advisable, since the bad bacteria feed off sugar and cheap carbohydrates (eg white flour).

Yes. We (rich western countries) know that today. But - and this is my point - people who have bad teeth today often (also) have them for completely different reasons (seen in hindsight) than poor dental care.

For instance medical Drugs that cause you to have a constantly dry mouth even lead to extremely bad teeth in the short term. This also includes meth, hence meth face (-> dry mouth -> body's own defenses cannot work -> bacterial infestation -> tooth loss). In patients taking medical drugs this is prevented by lozenges without sugar. Of course Meth users could take them as well

It's just not so easy as: "brush your teeth 3 times a day & no sugar and you have them forever" but a multi factor problem we don't know every parameter even today.

Fret no more 3D printing to the rescue with newer ceramic materials, everyone will be able to have a gleaming white smile again, From dentures, partials to individual teeth, full dentures can be printed in 2 hours once you have been measured, scanned and then properly fitted as the last process. Many of us will be able to get back our self confidence again.

And then there is in Europe the health care system, that Americans can not even dream of. Yep, that is when you live in a third world country, where a universal health care system isn't on the horizon but up for debate since ... 150 years.
