I know I'm new here but I made an account because of Army of Ninjas comment and I got say he's got a point. If you know the dog is trouble you should know he would act like that, no matter how good your intentions are. And I get that Army of Ninjas wasn't trying to shame him for what he did, but warn people for that kind of stuff. By the end of the day it really is a fucked up situation and the guy acted to protect himself but he shouldn't had to protect himself in the first place.

Also I have no idea how I can get into the community but I enjoy the point of view of most of you guys and I've been reading stuff here for quite a while. I only have to thank you all for all the stuff and the great discussions, it's a relief to know there's a place like that on the web and there's many openminded guys here who share the love that I have for music. Sheers from Braziland

Hi Oddlaga, welcome to the community.

Back in topic lol. Phil's still got it! I once built a custom soloist style guitar (Warmoth) inspired by the Phil's sig (well the body anyways).

I also smoked for over 30 years (trying to quit now). Never drank, nor have done any drugs. My voice however, has seen better days though. But the biggest problem I have seen though concerning my performance has been arthritis. I am a keyboardist and guitarist as well as a vocalist. I have found all three areas have suffered due to arthritis. I keep trying though. My doctors say that playing is great exercise for me and my joints. If I knew back when I was younger and working as a roadie how important taking care of one's back was I would probably not have been a roadie.

    Drugs. Hardcore drugs.
I don't even think it was necessarily a negative experience for the audience.
    It just wasn't truly me.

@Army of Ninjas What am I supposed to do if an angry canine latches onto me? This isn't sarcasm. I'm sincerely asking.

protip... always lift with your legs ..(squat rather than bend over to pick up a load.) ..
and do not twist your spine !! torsion on your vertebra will mess the discs up royally !

@Pinkman I never dabbled much and I often wondered how anyone could perform on
stage up to snuff , as it were, if they were on anything heavy..

reportedly Hendrix played on LSD, and Stevie Ray would be roaring drunk when he played..
I guess massive talent can find its way through somehow...

When you're on LSD, the music plays you, brother.

I really was excited to see that the thread evolved. So of course I was a bit disappointed, when seeing that it was about the treating of a dog. And also it is not so much about Phil, but the question of the topic.

But there are people who understood what I meant and I want to thank those especially (you know who you are!).

Me and my band mate took a week off from work to record (and mix) the lyrics of a few songs. Exactly 2 days before I got a bad cold and my voice became hoarse. Two days later we started, but the voice definitely still sounded ill and it was almost impossible for me to reach the highest notes of my usual range. Later I discovered that I had 40°C fever (don't know the Fahrenheidt equivalent), but I continued. All in all we recorded the vocals of 6 songs, and I couldn't speak for a week afterwards, while curing the cold.

If only I had known that these recordings would have been the last of our project.

I used to be socially awkward to the point where my girl thought maybe I was a case of undiagnosed Asperger's.
My then, so-called "friends" would give me stuff to loosen up. The problem is I have an insanely addictive personality so the self-medication turned into self-experimentation in search of some great transcendental experience.
It just ended up being home-brewed cocktails of any and everything you could imagine for the just for the sake of feeling.
That sh!t numbed my spirit and made the natural/physical world seem more profound.
That was the illusion that slowly became my delusion.
It did make the music sound good though.
I'm blessed now I can reach that place with just pure thought, devoid of external alterations or influence.

Seeing Phil Collins back in action is still awesome. He's got major hearing issues but he'll be back on track soon I think. Seeing someone do what they love and have loved their entire life is still inspiring. I also think he's as much of a producer and musician as he is a singer if not more so.

Don't act aggressive or yell at the dog. Stay calm, don’t make eye contact and stay in your space. This tells the dog you aren’t threatening to them, you just want the space you’re in. If you are attacked, resist the urge to pull away, If the dog is latched on, try lifting the dogs legs off the ground.

Yeah, there's something there to that chorus- compare that melody to the Beatles' "The Long and Winding Road" :guru:

Did anything ever affect your performance?

    drugs

    (and a bad karma )

the thing is, all depends on WHY you take drugs.

the reason "talent has found its way out" with people like jimi (who died from it) or with SRV (who also died from it ... in a helicopter :bleh: )

is that maybe they had less psychological problems than the people who also take drugs and get affected by it.

take keith richards, for example : 70 +, still an addict, and still a good player, and still in an enough good shape to take the stage.

regarding phil collins, one must admit you can't call him a "technicaly good" singer.
just like bowie, jagger, and a lot of others, he can sing, but he stays in his range, he knows how to use HIS voice.

an opera singer wouldn't even become an opera singer if they'd smoke and drink a bottle of jack at every show,
it involves your health at every point.

I guess, with drugs and (or) music, or even in life : don't try to be someone you're not.
it will avoid a lot of the negative effects that you will get anyways.

Definitely drugs for me, but only Shrooms and weed. I had a bad trip on shrooms at rehearsal once, never repeated that! With weed I totally forgot all the lyrics to every song. I used to do a lot of speed, that was okay, but it can affect your throat, used to do coke a fair bit too. You suddenly start putting tracks that are normally in the 120 bpm area, up to 200 bpm, distort all the drums and get a nice gabber mix going on! Always a laugh! :rofl:XTC, I used to forget I was meant to be setting up, and spent ages looking at the pretty lights on my equipment, but that was while working on music at home. Now I only drink and smoke, which seems to help my voice. The alcohol is definitely for nerves, and to be fair music and drinking go hand in hand for me. I've never played live sober, and I really don't think I could. I have major anxiety, and panic attacks. I think I'd totally freak out if I went on stage sober!

I just remembered and had to add this. I used to play keys all the time, had an accident at work caused by another person, had my little finger on my right hand crushed off. Yep, crushed, not broken. I've never been able to play the same since. I'm left handed but my right hand is my dominant leading hand. The accident severed the tendon so the joint near the tip of my finger doesn't bend anymore, and I still have nerve damage, so the tip of my finger is numb. I'm 33 now, and was about 17 when the accident happened. Still bugs the Hell out of me now.

They say I drink a lot but they have never seen me drunk. The truth is, maybe they have just never seen me sober.

@subGENRE, you have absolutely no idea how true that is to my life! I have a couple of friends that have never seen me sober. That makes it sound like I may have a bit of a drinking problem... Rather than own up to that, I'm going to use the fact that I don't see them very often as a cover-up. Yeah, that's definitely what it is...

    @Darren Mason
    I can relate.
I imagine my acceptance speech will go something like this, " First of all I would like to thank my liver for hanging in there with me for all these years........"
