I wonder if anyone can recommend a decent de-esser plugin?
Anything apart from Waves would be great.

Each sung vowel/consonant can be seen in waveform. Just use gain automation pre and/or post any processing. Transparent, clean, neutral and more real. It will sound like mic caught S's less.

 

Never really found one that does it (for me) better than manual editing........although there is a HF Limiter in TDR's limiter 6 that does a pretty transparent job of nailing down the errant freqs, but its only from a specific freq and on up...but it is very transparent.

Also DeHarsh from Plugin Alliance can work if only a touch is required

But I'd to agree with @mild pump milk the long way round sounds better.

Fabfilter DS is just teh shits.

 

I actually have the Fabfilter pack Baxter and didn't realize that DS was a De-esser so I'm gonna try that out first.

deessers plug can destroy the sound, try this way if you want
1 load a multiband compresser, compress the high range
2 load an eq in m/s mode, leveling the high range
3 you can also load a gate plugin to remove some high range harsh peak

In what world? Sure , what you said is legit but that is nothing more than a very basic signal chain of a very basic d-esser ,be it cheap gear or a plugin. Truth be told it is not that simple. It all depends on the frequency's. Every input source if different, Females sing a bit higher than most male singers ,certain drummers may hit a hit hat a bit too hard and ..well you get the idea. @DieM There is no one solution as there is never just one problem. I suggest you try as many as you can and run your material though them all and let you ears decide. Lots of great suggestions up above...just sayin"

Have you even actually been in a real studio? Dealt with drunk drummers. A crappy singer but she was hot and the money man was banging her so..UGH , have you ever done any front of the house(live concerts)? Go do all of that and then and only then can you come and retort. You should try Harrison AVA De-esser. One of the best as well as Fabfilter Pro DS. They will do but I recommend automation even more. Most of the time when setting up your de-esser to treat S’s , you will need settings for the Sh sounds. In between you will alter some high frequencies one way or another.

I've gotten great results w/ Toneboosters Sibilance. Better than the often mentioned ones but just my .02.

 

I like Fabfilter as it's so versatile and often does the trick in its default state but with a bit of twiddling can be tuned to perfection.
I'm very interested in No Avenger's info about SPL though, and will be giving that a try soon.
