I wonder which DAWs and notation programs support linked MIDI clips. I mean a clip that can be used multiple times per project and can be updated or replaced at once, similarly to linked audio files, not necessary as .mid file but some kind of reusable object. I'm really missing this functionality. I remember that this can be done in Live's session view by jumping between clips but this is very awkward for arrangement.

You can do this in Logic Pro by creating aliases of regions.

Note that Reaper is free to try, though there's no timeout, full version w/ just a nag screen indefinitely. Cheap though. There's a free version of Tracktion with bog standard plugins, the editing/recording/MIDI business is fully featured, but VST(i) support is great anyway so it's a worthwhile choice if you can BYOP (bring your own plugins).

Cakewalk is a fully featured DAW as well though the full version is going free/Sonar, but it's still available https://www.bandlab.com/products/cakewalk#download

So even if going free or el cheapo, you're not going to be limited at all
