    Hello,

    I have W7 for two years already, and everythings work fine and without problems... there is a lot of plugins, setups, presets of my own or downloaded from internet...

    This setup I build for two years... and I cannot imagine what will happen if hdd stop work or something else... :)

    The main reason for writing this post is a simple idea of existing somewhat application or service which will work offline and online, just like CDDB or similar services.

    In that way, every manufacturer of plugins or daw software must integrate this service functionality in software and can be synchronize with owners account, and there will be sections:

    * setup
    * presets
    * etc...

    It can be to share with other users.. etc... (somethings like in CableGuys Curve plugin I think)

    And, after I reinstall my daw, and install every plugin etc.. I just connect to this service and I get everything, my presets, my setups, etc...

    Simialar thing is now in Adobe, or Ubuntu One service etc...

    I plan to backup my presets now, but it's everywhere on my disk...

    * native instruments - /user/my_documents/
    * sylenth - /plugins_folder/
    * rob papen - /plugins folder/
    * arturia - somewhere in /program files/
    * etc...
    * etc...

    Same thing is for presets/banks... There is a rule (stainberg i think) that would be named as FXP (program) and FXB (bank) but now every manufacturer has own names and principles...

    It would be nice to make standard about this things.

    Just my imagine...

    ... sorry for bad english :)

    Im in the same boat as you; fearful my system may just die randomly!

    Ive been thinking about backups etc. and like youve shown with VST presets, there is a lot to worry about. Samples, projects, presets in various folder locations.... NIGHTMARE!

    Sorry I cant help you, just sayin, I know that feel bro!

    Problem with generaly backup (samples, etc...) is clear, we just need an extra HDD and a lot of space, but today that is cheap thing (maybe one external hdd with 2Tb or 1Tb)

    Generaly, my only problem is when I reinstall everything, I must spend cca month to everything put back on right place.

    There is a tones of massive presets (etc), and when my HDD (system) crash, all my samples gone... I have backup on DVD-s, CD-s, but it takes time.

    Just imagine this:

    1) reinstall everything

    - install ableton (click synhronize to "my imagine cloud", and set everything, just like cubase has export/import of setup)
    - install NI massive (click synhronize to "my imagine cloud service", and all of settings and presets are here)
    - install NI FM8 (same thing)
    - install etc ... (same thing)

    2) browse presets by genre (posted by users)

    - browse pads (with somewhat preview) and install (just like winamp dsp/skins work)
    - browse keys (same thing)

    hm.... just imagine

    When we speak about Ableton (per example), it have realy nice structure

    1) main app
    c:\program files\ableton (main application)

    2) lib
    c:\user\-user name-\my documents\ableton\Library

    This is clean scenario... just backup library folder, after instaling/reinstaling on new system or another computer, just place in user mydocu folder and everything is there...

    But, when we speak of NI Maschine, there is a mess

    * sounds is in user choice location
    * presets are located in c:\users\-user_name-\AppData\Roaming\Native Instruments\Maschine (which is btw hidden)
    * some things (points to other libs) are located in registry
    * some things (etc) are located at your neigbour maybe :)

    Maschine setup is complicated... You must install

    * maschine 1.01
    * maschine 1.05 update
    * maschine 1.3 (in order to get Abbey road sounds)
    * maschine 1.5
    * mascinge 1.51 update
    * etc..
    * etc...

    and where is Vintage Heat, and other addons...

    Very very mess
