I know this should be simple and I had it working perfectly a few months ago, but my studio got flooded and by the time new carpet went in my brain seems to have developed a specific non-functioning region.
Here's the setup: I am running Logic, AU Apollo 8ins/8outs, Presonus Central Station and an SSL SiX.
Connected to the SSL is a compressor and equalizer. This is the "outside the box" sound. I would like to get this back "inside the box" However, no matter how many times I try various wiring changes/software routings, I have the same problem. A feedback loop. In many ways I have compounded my problem by having so many options with a multitude of ins and outs.
I am obviously missing some vital piece of information and am overthinking the solution.
So, how do I go audio out and audio in without it looping back in on itself?

Maybe, but also if the itb outputs aren't just going externally i.e. they aren't set to No Output and simply firing out of a stereo bus/aux to your externals, there would be your loop. Coz daw is hearing it at output stage too.

 

The Apollo main outs are 1 and 2 into the SSL for monitoring and I have Logic recording on 3 and 4 which matches the cabling into the Apollo. Logic 3-4 is set to no output. (I'm sure this is how it used to work for me) I have also tried running Apollo 3-4 out into the Presonus's Alt TRS input and switching the monitor source but it always seems to end up back looping in the SSL.
It seems I have to break with the thought that I can go into and out of the Apollo without some kind of signal feedback.
Maybe I need to go out of the SSL into the Presonus directly for monitoring instead of out of the Apollo into the Presonus.
Either way my music sucks lately, so it's a nice distraction from having to admit how lame I am. I used to be quite good when I was younger...say around 60.

 

Okay. But what is your Master out in Logic saying? Because in the example I gave, you'd have to create a bus or aux on the Master just to send externally, and set the Master to No Output.

 

Oh!!! I get you. No I haven't tried that. I've tried setting it to alternate stereo pairs, but not that. You see how inflexible and bogged down my neuronal wiring has become? I dream about this stuff at night.

 

Problem. I can't see any way of setting Logics Main Stereo Out to "off".. I can change the I/O Assignments to other stereo pairs, but not off.

 

Yeah, I wondered about that, but couldn't be arsed to open up Logic to check!
So it must be done via a new stereo sub group I guess, otherwise in the same way I mentioned. Bypassing the need for the Master buss in this instance.
That is, IF this is where your loop is happening. I'm only guessing.

 

I have a feeling that I previously connected the main outs of the SSL to the Presonus Central Station which would stop the loop and I'd still be hearing the "out of the box, compressor and eq signal" but then how would that be routed into the Apollo? And if it was, isn't it still going to result in the loop again? My brain just isn't functioning on picturing the abstract problem.

 

I don't know much about 'Logic' but I did have a feedback looping problem once in Abelton. After spending hours delving deeper and deeper into a quagmire of advanced potential solutions, it turned out to be I was using the 'monitor' out inside the loop as opposed to just monitoring the finished article. Solution for me was muting the monitor.

Your situation is probably more difficult to fix, but could it be you , like me were overthinking the problem?

How about muting EVERYTHING you can, then switching audio on one step at a time. It may not resolve the issue but it's a good way of fault locating.

It's a definite yes when it comes to over thinking the problem. But I'm pretty certain I'm never going to solve it by any kind of internal routing if my line ins and my line outs are going into and out of the same interface. It can't do anything but feeding into its own signal. I'll pull the SSL out of the Apollo and go from there.

I passed the knowledge back in August 89. Drove a cab for 23 years and said that's it. all me mates who passed around the same time as me either died or gave their badges back. I fix computers now, it's far more relaxing.

Clear skies, fresh air. Where I live supplies the West End with organic produce, so it's all good!

 

The last 6 or 7 years I went part time and worked out of the city airport mostly. I spent hours there having a laugh and joke.. I was fixing all their laptops whilst I was there which gave me the idea to knock the cabs on the head.
