OK so you know how in a movie when someone gets knocked out or they get caught near an explsosion and their hearing gets temporarily damaged, their ears are ringing and all other sounds are muffled?

Well how can i recreate that?

I'm thinking and out of tune sine wave in the high register for the ringing, but how do i get that slight wave to it like it gets a little worse then better etc.

And as far as muffling the other sounds I know I'm gonna be cutting out a lot of frequencies but what sort of range should be left behind?

Also, should I be paying attention to panning / stereo imaging?

I'm hoping that someone has experience with this and can point me in the right direction simply to save time over experimentation.

    cheers, Vince

to save time, You can just sample the sound from where You heard it ?!?

...or import it in Your daw, run it through a spectrum analyzer and then try to recreate it on a synth

I have no experience with this, but that is the first thing that came into my mind...

Maybe it's better to use a narrow bandpass filter and lit the q go into self oscillation. That way you can control the amount of ringing and change the frequency easily.

Try to extract it from war videogames. Like EA Battlefield Series. I Heard it a lot with Battlefield Bad Company 2 or maybe Call of Duty or Medal of Honor.

Depends if they store audio files as wav or other protection format.

thanks for the replies, I appreciate it.

what I'm after is as much about processing all the other sounds as generating the ringing, maybe even more so.
I want to use it to build tension after the chord progerssion / melody in the breakdown.

i'll try to find an example of what i mean

For the ring part i usually use "Ring Thing" vst with arps and plucks to get that high-end rings. it's a very good and user-friendly plugin.

thanks mostwest, i'll check it out. who makes it?

here's an audio clip from lone survivor. hopefully it gives you an idea of what i'm talking about.
(plus i'll add the ringing in)

That should not be difficult to do!

You can use "Tinnitus Tamer" to create the specific hiss sound.
    Code:
    http://www.vavsoft.com/Tinnitus_Tamer.html
    - Then you record it as a separate sound.
    - After that just apply an EQ on your other sound material.

Other option (don't know if this works!):
    - Use VOXENGO Beeper
    Code:
    https://www.voxengo.com/product/beeper/

For cutting out the frequencies, I would use a high shelf filter to attenuate everything above a certain frequency.

The noise in my noodle sound exactly like putting your ears against a big seashell. It's maddening That, combined with a high pitch tone that is set underwater would probably simulate tinnitus.

Do you mean a type of riser where the sound whooshes up to near nothing but a high-pitch shreek?
Try a high pass filter with a high slope (dB per octave) and high Q (resonance). Run up all the way up in frequency.
Something simple by Audio Damage might work?

i'm not sure i'd call it a riser. it'll be more suttle than that.
And i'm thinking i'll be automating the stereo width and band pass width rather than the frequency of the ringing.
the ringing will stay roughly the same pitch but decrease in intensity and allow more of what's behind to come through and create the build.

I'm not sure if it's going to work but I can't think of a song I've heard it on before

One really high sine hardpanned left (9-15kHz).
One really high sine (in somewhat different pitch than the above mentioned) hardpanned right (9-15kHz).
Lowpass everything else (music, sound fx, etc, which you all group) around ~400Hz (steepness to taste) and turn that volume down until the sines are dominant.
