Actually that's not completely correct. The larger studios owned by SONY/CBS/BMG and EMI have them for a defined reason that is sensible. They also have MAC's and PC's for the identical reason. This is because the Producers they hire and bands who hire their studios do not always use the same DAW software or same operating system. They do it to accommodate diversity in people's choices. Sounds pretty accommodating to me. The diversity is exemplified in this forum noting how many people have different DAW's and O/S's. Logical even.

While there certainly are some silly people out there as you say and I agree some do exist, the major studios did not get that reputation for being silly.

 

I purchased jbridge and never looked back. Unless the plugin itself is dodgy, it is pretty stable.

I'm one of the dinosaurs that has used Cubase since the Atari ST days, (and before that Pro 12 and 24). Over the years I've used pretty much everything else, but still find Cubase is the most intuitive and logical way of doing things. It's always seemed strange to me that people MUST HAVE the latest and greatest releases of DAW's, and end up moaning about this and that, even though you can do everything you need to do in the older version.(Sadly, I suppose that applies to most things in life actually). It's all about your ears at the end of the day.

 

Definitely useful. It works like an adapter which is very similar to jbridge's. It is a sensible way to use 32bit plugins in a 64bit environment because it creates almost a shell-like environment that doesn't try to modify anything in the O/S.

I believe most people agree that there is no such thing as flawless software, so if you have something that works, doesn't trash your most liked programs or operating system and loads most of what you want, then I believe it's worth using. For me, the only reasons I upgrade are improved features and fixes which every upgrade has if you read the notes in any software, and the only reason to get rid of something is if it has reached the limit of its lifespan or usability and cannot go in the direction I wish to.

 

The bias is more that we've been using Cubase for such a long time (for me its from SX2 on) and with getting older we find it hard to get used to new things.

Cubase is a good, but certainly not the best DAW. The UI is antiquated and boring. Some pale colors here and there don't help. The new features that have been built in over time are not the big deal when it comes to the UI.
Instead of releasing a .5 and a .0 version every year, Steinberg should consider to renew the UI and some parts of the workflow completely. Because especially in today's world, appearances play an important role.

It is true that Cubase is not dead. It's just dying slowly. I believe there will be a slow dying process if not something fundamental does happen.
The old farts as @SineWave expressed it remain with the accustomed. The young ones look for something more modern. Thus I suspect Cubase to have a constantly aging userbase. When everyone of those retires, Cubase ceases to exist.

It would be interesting to compare the age structure of the users of different DAWs and to differentiate the income from new installations and updates.

I think so too. But people who e.g. started with Ableton will say the same for their favorite DAW. The fact is, it doesn't really matter what DAW you use anymore. The results are the same in the end.

Despite trashing it constantly and deservedly, I approve of a lot of their new features, like that mix overlay thing. I don't mind the way Cubase looks, it's just Adobified and more familiar to me. I do also like the lower zone etcs, so my tastes are prolly too outlandish!

I just wish that some of the ease of use with midi had caught on with the (seemingly separate and totally at odds) audio (borked) part of Cubendo. Just small, bizarre frustrations abound like not being able to move / recolor audio tracks in the mixer etcs.

 

Have v10,5 and Im not impressed, so I guess I´ll pass when v11 is released.

 

One of the cryptic funnies in the history software programming is that one of the first people who found that software was always prone to bugs because they found one, was Grace Hopper.

Every piece of software, whether musical, office-workflow-based, 3D modelling, graphic arts, video, games or database-oriented at some point has had or is yet to have at least one not-so-good update in its life-cycle. This update can take the form of removing something that was great and it now sucks, through to adding a problem that was never there, to crashing the entire operating system under certain conditions, to simpler things like some things do not display correctly under certain conditions or something does not load, or everyone's pet hate, that they changed the layout and/or functionality in the new version.

I am no clairvoyant so I cannot foretell the rise or demise of any product and to be honest, I would not wish to.
Sometimes it is better to want what you already have than to have what you want.

That is based on your friends and says nothing about the popularity of Cubase in general though.
Many of your friends probably use cracked software, and those are the tools available to them. Honestly, Cubase hasn't been fully cracked since v5 so that is why it's not popular among bedroom "producers".

I agree though that I see a risk of Cubase losing in popularity just because it hasn't been cracked and also it has a dongle which apparently is a problem for the new generations.

Secondly, it totally depends on what kind of music you produce or record. In the rock/pop world Cubase, Logic and in the US Protools are the main DAWs. Studio One is more common in smaller project studios also. I have never come across someone using Cakewalk in their studio, not anymore anyways. Some of the top notch artists (production quality wise) I know use Cubase (two electronica examples from my head Infected Mushroom and Noisia). Reaper is very rare in project/professional studios, it's just not easy enough for everyone to use since you have to manually configure every little detail to fit your own workflow, so collaborating with it is a nightmare.

Also, more people are using several DAWs nowadays for different tasks. They all have good and bad sides, different focuses.

I have tracked and recorded and mixed rock albums, all done in Cubase both at recording studio and my own studio at mixing stage. I would never choose to use Ableton, FL Studio or Bitwig for that.

Myself? I use Cubase and Bitwig.

Bitwig is the most inspiring DAW for electronic music without a doubt. For mixing? Naah. Same goes for Ableton, few people use it to record and mix a band.

I have a love-hate relationship with Cubase since 21 years back (started using Cubase in 1999).. After using Bitwig I realized that Cubase is so far behind regarding workflow and modulation chains that is almost a joke. BUT, they are made for different purposes. You must keep that in mind.
