I'm a little bit older than you, born 1955, and I grew up in Liverpool so grew up surrounded by The Beatles. Country (and Irish folk music) was the music of my parents generation, and for most of my youth, I thought it was intolerable. Horrible, corny old fogey music.

My first love was classic 60's rock -- Stones, Bowie, Hendrix, Cream, Velvets, etc. But by about 72 or 73, it mostly turned to shit. (Did the Stones have another decent album after Exile on Main Street? I haven't heard one.) so I started listening exclusively to soul music.

76, I saw the Sex Pistols at Erics and for a few years it was all about punk. I had a particular affection for Elvis Costello, so when Almost Blue came out it was transformative for me. These were great songs. Like soul music, they were songs that took the concerns of the common man, and sold them with an empathy that really spoke to me. So although my music tastes continued to develop (today, I make mostly Techno and Tech House), country music has been and will always be an abiding love for me.

Here's one I like. Not 100% sure what particular taste this song files under, but to me sounds like Country alright.
    George Harrison, 1970(?) :guru:

    Bluegrass is best country:

Though that Buck Owens song reminds me how much I love the Bakersfield sound.

I swear I saw the New Riders of the Purple Sage once -- supporting the Grateful Dead. I can only remember two things about the event. a.) Between the two of them, they seemed to play for about eight hours. (Though that might have been a function of the Operation Julie pink microdot I was high on at the time.) and b.)

Still prefer Ricky Nelson's original though:
