    Hey guys,

Check out this reverb shootout video. I'm not sure if anyone has published it yet, but it's very cool, so here it is:

    Cheers,

I once made a similar test myself with the main difference that I created a hall from scratch with three (or four) reverbs.
At the end I made three (or four) pretty different sounds, even though I went for the same goal and none of them convinced me completely.
Maybe I should stick to presets. [IMG]

When it comes to making music using software at some point most of us we face the "musician or music technician" dilema. as long as the day has 24h at least ;-)
    I'm the latter always lol:rofl:
(of course with things even more techie than reverb experimentation)

My fast and easy test for reverbs :

-use DRY takes (not orchestra banks dammit ...)
-one acoustic guitar FULL left, one vocal FULL right
(You can find free multitrack online)

Take a similar "regular" Hall preset on each reverb (tweak decay to match)
Now, listen to WET signal ONLY
You will hear easily if reverb is True Stereo or not.
And you will hear how it SMEAR the signal ... or not.

I only use reverbs NOT smearing the WET signal. Because if signal is already smeared WET alone ... it is a mess when mixed with DRY.
Signal should be PERFECTLY CLEAR on full WET only.
Witch is not intuitive, because we never use reverbs full wet. Ence the test.

But if you blend a muddy reverb sound with anything ... it is going to be muddy.
It is a MYTH that a reverb "blur" the signal : a good reverb (with pre delay/early reflection set right) is NOT going to "blur" the signal. Even at 50/50.

I rejected a lot of reverbs that way. Unlike what you may think at first, testing all programs or settings on a reverb is useless.
I use "regular" Hall as an intermediate/average program.A bad reverb is a bad reverb ... even on Small Room or Large Hall.
It is just harder to hear

RP-Verb, as example, is always "roomy" ... even Large Halls.
On the other side, LX480 is amazing on everything.

Some ppl talk about "taste", yes ... but listen to full WET reverb on DRY sound takes first

Good observation, but at 17:38f you can see that he chose Lexicon and they just messed up the names later. So at 19:43 all is correct again.

Crazy that they just "forgot" the best reverb in the world, the Quantec Yardstick ("secret weapon").
...The most realistic artificial reverb ever.
    http://www.quantec.com/index.php?id=sound_clips

The "Hallelujah effect" no other artificial reverb can do, the Quantec Yardstick is the one and only that can do it ("The most striking feature of the Hallelujah effect is its ability to massively intervene in the chronological order of a musical sequence. Along with various other acoustic phenomena, the diagram below (Fig. 1) visualizes in red how Room Simulation, analoguous to a real room, may rearrange the syllables (and hence also the notes) here. Based on the original »Hal-le-lu-jah«, the room responds with »le-lu-jah-Hal« in our example. Such a permutation within musical phrases, far too complex for human hearing, is one more reason why true room simulation sounds so stunningly alive.") :

Come on guys, we are the 30/05/2018, in the XXIth century, don't be so ignorants and obscurantists, do the shootout again with the real contenders.

They all sound the same to me so I'd give the win to Valhalla because it's only $50.

for me, the real point here.. is that neither the Bricasti nor the TC 6000 sound $4000 to $5000 better than
the plugins.. I'll take the altiverb and the R2 thanks..

I missed his point about the soft sul pont hatred. 60 cello players playing softly creates an ocean of a textured string sound, and the ones in this library sounded pretty good to me. I'm definitely not a Spitfire fan boy though.

yeah it was something sort of neutral..so you could hear it over and over and pay attention to the verb

I have heard some shootouts where they use cringeworthy vocals ..and I get distracted from what the
plugin is doing by the twisted cries of agony that pass for "singing" ugh... :snuffy:

For sure, for some reason I wasn't as impressed with the Valhalla as I was expecting when compared here.

I should have copied the vid too but my quote you referred to was regarding Jazz-n-stuff's Hans Zimmer strings overview youtube link. Social media is a weakpoint for me at the moment :guru:

Yer not wrong........although I reckon Altiverb and the FF verb could cover all the bases (an' the vox an' the drums....) ............

still like HOFA's IQ verb tho

I thought Exponential Audio sounded great along with Valhalla and Lexicon but Exponential Audio was my favorite. If I was blindfolded then my senses might tell me otherwise.
