Anyone who knows me, knows full well I never go in for this sort of thing, however, I spotted something on Yahoo that has made me question my whole thought process. It is regarding the word 'receipe' trivial I know, but let me elaborate.

When I was learning how to spell, I distinctly remember being taught the word as receipe, now it seems the whole world is spelling it 'recipe' Can someone please confirm I haven't woken up in a parallel universe, or does anyone else remember spelling it the same way?

I know this has very little to do with music so..

I went to school in the '60s and '70s, I was taught it was spelled Recipe. In the U.S.

You got me confused for a sec there and I think I remember it being spelled that way, too [British English, more than 30 years ago]. Weird, indeed.

But when in doubt, I always just check out the good old Cambridge Dicktionary. [oops :)]

  8. Is it, could it be a theatre/theater, England/USA sort of thing? It could also be a regional spelling. I took a screen shot of a search and found many spelling it that way. I don't think you are insane or forgetful. You might have woken up in a parallel universe, but that cannot be confirmed because of the spelling of the word recipe/receipe (spellcheck doesn't like receipe).

When I posted this question I would have bet my life savings on it being receipe, (also growing up here in the UK 30 years ago) even AFTER checking EVERY online dictionary, but I found a dictionary I used at school just now and yep it says the same as everyone else.

    Well, I'll be buggered!!!!

    Thanks everyone!

@ SuperLiquidSunshine Thank you for that, I cant believe I have gone through my whole life believing it is spelled that way. (and it be wrong, because I'm really quite good usually) Even my two links that I posted initially ^^^^^ from The BBC have conflicting results!

I don't know how old you are but as we all know our memory degrades mostly in a forgetting sort of way.I don't see why another sort of degradation couldn't be the changing and distorting of ones memories over time while maintaining an unshakable conviction that they haven't.
Far more likely i believe is what we in my family call a " Brackish moment " where my sister and mother both believed the word brackish to mean brown discoloured water and myself and brother-in-law smugly corrected them. In this case I think it was just bad learning right from the start. Since then I have seen its misdefined use in novels too so perhaps its a trap waiting to be fallen into.....something about the form of the word suggesting its meaning

Another thing from my family was always pronouncing recipe as ' ree sipe' as it's spelling would imply.
I would say be prepared for many more of these types of moments

Bonne continuation as they say here in France

could it be that you are confusing 2 words? receipt and recipe? since they are spelt similar it could mess with eachother in your memories

    editt: just found this

    Receipt vs recipe
A receipt is an acknowledgement of something having been received. Often, a receipt is an acknowledgement of payment for goods or services rendered. Receipt may be used as a noun or a verb. An archaic meaning of receipt is recipe, the use of the word receipt to mean recipe survived until the latter part of the twentieth century in the United States, especially in the southern United States. Receipt is derived from the Old French word recite, which means receipt, recipe, prescription.

Of course. They've been lying to us ever since they started drugging our air, back in the 1930s. The proper spelling is, and always has been, ræsipie.

Hip-hip artists are known for their illiterate misspellings (intentional or not), so I don't know why you're buggin' about this.

I can't find any spelling evidence exists on Collins, Merriam-Webster, and even on the Online Etymology database. I do feel some conspiricy has begun to make that word extinct. Does this mean Alien does exist? It may wipe our entire species.
