    Hi people,

    i have an AKG Perception 120 a small-diaphragm condenser mic that keeps crackling and making pop noises.

    i bought this mic 10 years ago and have already replaced it, but would be nice to get it working again.
    i've tried cleaning the capsule very softly with alcohol and cotton, didn't make any difference.

    does anyone have any ideas?

    the manual states;
    Crackling noises or low output. Possible Cause Remedy • Partial short circuits due to excessive humidity. • Place microphone in warm, dry room and allow to dry.

    Seems odd that mechanism would be so sensitive to humidity but you never know.

    What comes to mind is that a condenser mic is powered and power could be cutting out from a faulty cable.

    Yes they seem to be quite sensitive to humidity.
    My Rhode condenser has given a really low signal a couple of times. After not using it for a while.
    A quick blow with a cold hair dryer sorted it both times.

    they make a device for accoustic guitars that can INCREASE humidity - which you don't want, but they also measure humidity and if you add a couple packs of dessicant and one of these in a box or case to store the mic, it might help regulate humidity and also let you know how much you have.

    IT WON'T ADD HUMIDITY, unless you fill the chambers with water. empty it will just be a humidity gauge.
