compression - Lower Threshold More vs increase ratio More

    once you set the threshold and ratio at a level so that compression is active...

    if you need more of the compression you have the choice to either

    1) Lower Threshold even more
    OR
    2) increase ratio more

    can you tell me the difference if any?

    Threshold is the level that has to be exceeded for compression to occur...ratio is the amount of compression applied.

    A lower threshold means compression will be applied to lower signal levels regardless of what the ratio is set to.

    Of course there is a difference.
    A higher threshold will leave the content with lower level dynamically unaffected. It just reduces the movement of the high level content more.
    A lower threshold, on the other hand, will change the dynamics for the low level content too and reduce the dynamics of the louder parts less (compared to the higher threshold with higher ratio).
    IOW:
    - high threshold, higher ratio -> low levels keep their dynamics, higher levels are compressed more
    - lower threshold, same ratio -> low levels are compressed too

    Even for the same GR this will result in a different sound. When to use which is a matter of source and aim.
