Multiband compression.I always use multiband compression for the bass(es).

The trick could be a good bass, bass pedals (compressor, overdrive/saturation, EQ, octavider, low end exciter, dual/split processing, etc) and then the amp (tube amp, mic choice, line out mixed with mic setup, etc). Maybe the engineer just have to add a tad of compression since the bass sound is already good. It's usually like that if the bass player is good and knows his shit.
