    Hi guys!

Is there any way to clone a dongle?

Can I buy a usb dongle and copy the one from my friend to use it myself?
It would also be a backup copy if you lose or break.

    Thanks in advance,

Absolutely! I'm wondering why noone thought about this clever way to avoid copy protection methods like USBLicenser before!

I know its llegal to crack and duplicate hardware key, that is why I am asking.

One thing is to "share" a license with a friend, and the other is that your license has 50,000 people you do not know.

Mr. Steinberg see that your license has 50000 users. I would ask you what happens to the original license.

Would be really nice if I could clone my own dongle just to keep as a backup. Love Cubase but fuck Steinberg's one activation/one dongle replacement policy

I do not think it is possible to clone a dongle. They look like USB drives but they are not. I have never dismantled one but I guess that there is some clever processing going on inside the dongle. I think this would have been publicised before now if it was that straightforward. IMHO.

sadly if the license are on usb e-licenser already you can not move the license back to soft e-licenser .

this are not an real backup , this are just an 25 hours working replacement license on another new usb e-licenser . after that you needs to ask and they investigate before you get new licenses . also its only for steinberg products and not for products by other developer which using usb e-licenser protection .

From what I've heard through the grapevine, the encryption on these things is next to impossible to break through, so what it sounds like to a total noob like me is, if you were to try copy the contents of a dongle you'd basically just have a bunch of nothing.

    ...I think.

I think the more pertinent question is "If I clone my dongle, will it still have a soul?"

If the dongle is designed properly, then the answer is: Very unlikely.
A good example is a private key stored on a chip which is never exposed and cannot be accessed electrically.
The communication between computer and dongle often follows a challenge-response paradigm where a challenge is encrypted with the private key and can be verified with the public key, with no known algorithm (except time-consuming brute-force attacks) being able to find the private key with any of the available information. Because the challenge is usually a randomly chosen code, you can't just store the response and clone the key.
It would fail the next challenge, and from R2R we know that some software's bad performance is due to frequent dongle calls and related calculations.
