ChordPulse is good but it has a big problem that you can not trust it so much. You do not have full control on voicing. You do not have open voicing in it. Without it, you can not expect chords sound as intended. Suppose you want Dmaj chord. It can consist notes from any octave but in ChordPulse you can not select which note from which octave to be played.

This causes you can not rely on some chords but in piano roll or staff without any limitation in voicing, they may sound differently.

I am the fan of open voicing because chords sound beautifully. I usually uses 5 or 6 notes even for the triads like guitar strumming.

I'm talking about hearing the different chord flavors in real-time while cycling through a chord progression. Learning by doing

    It has an inversion function.

It's not a silver bullet, but I think it's great as a quick and dirty way to audition the different chord extensions. I use it as a composing aid and work within it's limitations, which is actually good as the end result has more of me in it! I find it helps if you turn off the drums and stuff, and just use the training style, i.e. plain piano chords.

Once I have my chords jotted down I then move to a real instrument, or if you want, you can even export the basic chords to midi and play around with them in a DAW, to find a melody, etc. Using this technique I can come up with a verse/chorus outline in +/- 3 minutes

I then think about the arrangement, as I play around with voicings and tweak the melody, aka incremental refinement.

Note: I believe there is some chord optimization going on under the hood regarding the close grouping of notes, but many players do this automatically anyway to prevent a large movement in the sound.

Ok another stupid question.. So lets say I make a chord its usually 8 bars or what have you.. Do most writers use this same chord progression the entire song or do they change the chord down breakdown/buildup/drop etc. I notice there are 3 theory parts to a chord progression called stability, tension, and one other.. How many chord patterns do most tracks have? A few?
