Can anybody explain what time of instrument this is? Is it simply a heavily processed flute? Sounds really exotic....!

I'm pretty sure ain't a flute sound. Is the so called "Dolphin sound"

Basically take a sustained vocal sound which plays one note, find the key of the sound.

Put it in a simpler, use distortion, eq, reverb, multiband compression and here you go.

    Mr. Wolfe is right.

It is a repitched vocal sample. All you need is a sampler, you could get fancy and chop it up into a REX file and vocode it, it would be more flexible, but a sample -> key -> trigger -> out

Work at it, it's becoming a little too omnipresent though, was cool at first but now it's the new UH_OH.
