In Reaper, I recorded a MIDI pattern from the Yamaha DJX. Some notes have a hard, L/R, L/R pan that sounds okay with a synth pad but not good with a piano.

Is there a way to remove or edit the pan in Reaper's MIDI editor?

First off, are you sure that the panning is happening in MIDI?

TBH, I never use panning on the MIDI side of things.. for me, any panning will be done using the pan knob on the track (i.e. once it's converted to audio). Whatever instrument you're playing the MIDI through might have some sort of panning built into the sound design of it to.

Excluding those possibilities, and if you're certain the panning values are part of the MIDI, there are probably several ways to do what you want, but here are a few that I know of:

Way 1 - Open up a MIDI item that you want to edit the panning for... in the piano roll view, down in the bottom left, there's a drop down where you can pick the CC you're looking at. I'd be taking an educated guess here, but I think you'd want to look at 10 (Pan Position MSB) and/or 42 (Pan Position LSB), and/or under 14-bit at the bottom, 10/42 Pan Position 14-bit. See if anything appears for any of these. If they do, you can right click on that drop down box and pick "Clear Lane"

Way 2 - Another way is to open the event list and look for/remove panning info. Have a look through, if there isn't much to look at. If there is, then filter things. In the same MIDI editor, click View->Mode: Event List (alt+3 by default... alt+1 to go back to piano roll view). Then just hit the filter button (the F icon) and change event type to Control Change (CC), put a check mark beside Control and pick the pan position related ones. I'm not sure if you can sort this whole event list by parameter, but that'd be way quicker/easier too.

Way 3 - Drop a ReaControlMIDI instance on the track before whatever instrument you're using and enable PAN.. just hard code it to the center. This should override any panning in the MIDI. You might have to pick a different CC, and whatever instrument you're using to make audio could have panning of its own that then overrides this centering.

I'm sure there are scripts that exist to remove a specific lane of information as well too, such as panning... and there's probably an easier way to do any of this too (that hopefully someone else will provide!). I pretty much just use MIDI for note values, velocity and pitch/mod wheels and that's about it.

Thanks for the info. I tried Way 1 and found an envelope, with varied points, in "10 - Pan Position MSB". Clicked "Clear Lane", which removed the envelope. Alas, the panning did not change. The L/R toggle on the Kontakt screen still slides back and forth during playback.

Did you also check the 14 bit CCs? Specifically, 10/42 Pan Position 14-bit. It also would need to be cleared, if anything there.

If that still doesn't do it, did you check the event list I mentioned in "way 2" to see if something else was sending panning information? The other possibility is your panning slider in kontakt is set to some other cc. If you right click it, you should only see the learn option (dont actually click that). If you see something else to REMOVE as well, I'd suggest removing it, as maybe it's learned to some other CC that's causing panning automation.

Lastly, if still a problem... if you change to a different Kontakt instrument altogether (preferably a different library), does the pan slider still automate around the same? (just to test)

Whenever something strange is happening in MIDI, this is step 1 for me.

Success. I cleared the lane in 10/42 Pan Position 14-bit. At first I thought nothing had changed. Then I realized that the MIDI track consisted of 3 short loops that I cut and pasted. I only edited the first loop. By the time the Kontakt screen opened, the first (fixed) loop had already played and it was on to the next loop that still had the Pan. Duh.
