Celemony has launched their new product "Capstan"

"With Capstan there is now for the first time a program capable of removing wow and flutter from musical recordings – whether on tape, compact cassette, wax, shellac or vinyl. Capstan detects wow and flutter by analyzing the musical material itself, so the medium is of no relevance. In this, Capstan is clearly superior to solutions such as bias tracking, because Capstan still works even if the tape has already been copied several times or digitized only in low resolution."

Capstan costs US$4,458 (€3,790). :excl: GOSH!!!
Useful product - but definitely overpriced! :wow:

    Its a very specialized program.

I for one have no need for it whatsoever.

I checked out the video of it about a month ago and its very impressive. I simply have no use for it, convienient too because id never be able to afford it either!

This could be very useful - think about your old tape or vinyl recordings...
I have some own compositions made in the Eighties using a Tascam analog recording machine.
Today i can hear relevant flutters on the sound material, especially on a guitar track!
This thing could fix all these issues... too bad that it's much too expensive (for me)!

Melodyne can detect and shift pitches also. Can this be done with Melodyne somehow, e.g. by using some pitch correction curve?
How much manual work would be involved? I guess the main challenge is pitch detection.

    For the techies here:
There's an interesting ftp site on Wow&Flutter correction: ftp.bestweb.net (log in with usr=plangent, pw=public),
then look for aes117.pdf. At least for analog tape, they can use the HF bias signal as a reference for pitch variation.
Some more advanced, more universal techniques are shown in http://digitalpreservation.ssl.co.uk/asset_arena/text/er/118AES_paper.pdf

Quite funny, there're plugins to remove wow & flutter... Then there're plugins to add tape saturation and to bring the same wow & flutter :)
Useless unless you're in audio restoration business. If you are, then it worth the price.
