Just been eyeing these up and am intrigued. Not sure if intrigued enough to buy, and a trial from the sister site would be nice, but not sure if they need online connection like Mixed In Key does?! Though, this could put me off as I prefer to be offline when making music to focus myself.

Anyway, anyone know much about the new versions? And are they worth it?

As far as I understand, you need to be online all the time to use them

 

I haven't purchased it no, but I believe I have tried the version off the sister site out previously.

 

sorry. I read kinda fast sometimes or I would link you to this on their page. Phaseplant is the engine this uses for synthesis.
This is a 100$ front end controller to it, if you already have Phaseplant. Is how I look at this piece of software. Now, you can of course just copy and paste midi around between applications. Unless you are one of their customers who need to load a midi directly into a plugin. instead of in their daw. That's their new upgraded kind of features. It is like Falcon in that regard, but with Phaseplant underneath it.

If you do not have phase plant already, well it is a capable phase distortion synth. Probably stripped down in features, extensively. Is that worth 100$? Maybe to someone who does not have that synth already, or need it's deeper editing? maybe. To me personally, it is 100$ worth of Snake Oil.

oh, I definitely would. it's a nice synth. I just can't see spending 100 bucks for these people to generate the midi before it. They are doing battle with Unison for the "can't play shit" market.

 

Phaseplant is a red herring.
You wouldn't buy Captain Chords because it comes with a few Phaseplant presets.

It's very good to generate midi parts as the basis for a songstarter (as was the previous version).

It can't do everything that Scaler 2 does but in some way, Captain Chords is more immediate at generating results.

It's probably worth the upgrade to Epic if you already have the previous version as it's a cheap upgrade but I'd probably look at Scaler 2 first if you haven't got it at all.

 

I'd say buying a chord book is a better investment.
