I'm not educated in musical theory...at all. So basically i use my ears and put one chords after another till i get a great sounding progression.

I'm into trance, futurepop (the real one from the nineties) and synthpop.
I also enjoy epic, cinematic music. I do not do regular EDM, electro, hip hop, funk, disco, etc.. Neither am i into Jazz, blues, rock, metal etc.

I was used to Harmony Improvisator which was very epic and classical score sounding but it's 32 bits and not updated anymore. Pity. Does not work well when bridged too.

So what chord progression generator would you choose ?

captain chords all day long, scaler is ok but when you load all 3 captain plugins you get chords, melody and bassline, scaler cant do that

which can all be made from any chord progression generated by any chord plugin. i had captain plugins but it really didnt impress me.

 

ChordPotion is NOT good to find Chord Progressions, its a tool that makes melodys and Bassline from existing Chord Preogressions.
Also it can add a rythm to a existing Chord. It´s a Nice tool i´m using, but to find a Progression i use Captain Chords

Long time reader, First time poster here. I own both Scaler and Captain Chords. I was very hesitant to drop the asking price on CC, but once I saw they have 30-day money back I bit the bullet.

The GUI is very very smooth, easy to understand. The cons which a lot of people are turned off by is it does require constant online. This wasn't a problem for me since I have a home studio and also have internet here. If you're on the fence give it a go, I don't regret my purchase because the speed/workflow of the tool is by far the best part, the preset sounds are pretty shit sounding but that's not an issue since I route it all out to VST synth anyway. Comes with melody and deep (bass). If you have beat block there's only 2 ways around it. Getting your dick sucked, or Captain Chords generator.

 

Will be pretty comprehensive after they release Beat and Hook additions to the Captain Chords set of plugins..

Of course, LORD KNOWS.. when that will be.. they wont give u any kind of ETA on release... which honestly is a bit annoying.

 

still Harmony Improvisator is the best, it works perfectly with https://jstuff.wordpress.com/jbridge/ at least for me

other good is the progression builder at the bottom of https://www.hooktheory.com/theorytab/index look after a working one and keep the 70% of it ...

I've heard so many theories as to why this, yet no clear cut answer. The most obvious answer is piracy, so they don't lose out on pirated versions. Yet on their forums "Conspiracy Theorists" believe they can own your work? since its cloud based? (yes, all your projects/chords/melodies within the app are saved to a cloud apparently). These theorist believe CC can track/see how you built a hit song, perhaps own some sort of part or get credit/royalty when you make a beatport hit using only their algorithms? (I'm not making this up, people actually think this on their forums). Does anybody here know if that's even possible to claim that? It seems farfetched and crazy

It's only web based? I didn't know that...It's a deal breaker for me. My DAW is Offline and it will stay that way.

 

Unfortunately, the GUI is both ugly (no graphic designer whatsoever) and unreadable on my 4k screen... But thanks for the suggestion. It does have impressive specs indeed... I'll wait for version 4 to see if that's fixed.

A – You can use Captain plugins offline to play the MIDI you’ve already written. However, you need to be connected to the Internet to write new MIDI notes inside the plugins themselves. Our generators require Internet access.

So what happens when you’re on a laptop, flying on an airplane? You can write MIDI notes inside Live and play them using Captain plugins, but you won’t be able to generate a new chord progression using our User Interface. Internet is becoming common everywhere, even in the sky. Most studios have wifi. This requirement is usually not a problem.

Well it is for me.

1/ I don't like ties. Especially online ties.
2/ What if the company goes bankrupt?

After 30 years+ in the computer business i've seen more than one major company going down. So called "Too big to fail" ones. It's already boring to have stuff on dongles but at least you can still use the product for the lifespan of your dongle. But Online only? Thanks but no thanks.
