That alone doesn't solve it, but for the DAW to work with 64 samples as well, it is needed, I noticed it. If it is not switched to Background Services, the clicks are there. But it is not enough alone. WiFi needs to be disabled in BIOS and virus scanner needs to be off. In that case it works.

The only problem is that it is not very convenient to do all the needed tweaks all the time I need Reaper. But at least it works now.

Someone mentioned setting the throttling off for specific apps is a possible solution in Windows 11 for such problems with a tool called powercfg in CMD (or Powershell??). But I wonder if it works in Win 7 too? I have the full command but it reports error because the syntax might be different in Win 7.

 

process explorer (as I mentioned earlier in this post) will do affinty changes for testing purposes, you can allocate which core certain programs run on, and exclude them from other cores for troubleshooting..etc..

 

Dude u check Reaper's performance meter, do both reaper and ur PC show a similar usage. Once again disable paging file for a short while just for testing, if u r using ur pc for other needs. And it requires a restart untill restart pagefile.sys ll not bea cleared

 

right click on the process and you can set its priority as well as affinity.

 

I restared the computer of course. Okay, will check this with the meters as well.

 

Ahh, I have Process Explorer but never noticed you can do things like that with it.

But what should be the strategy here to follow when setting all this? Let's assume I have Reaper only that I run. What to do next? I check which core it is running on and I exclude everything else from that core? Or what is the order of tasks I need to do?

 

Meanwhile I also got a suggestion that solved this problem I have for another user. He typed this in CMD:

powercfg /powerthrottling disable /path "C:\REAPER\reaper.exe"

Do you know how this command looks in Windows 7? I tried to check, but the help displays so much text that I cannot scroll back enough to find this parameter, and the reverse of it. I wonder if the syntax is the same as well or not?

Processor State

All modern CPU’s have the ability to throttle down when not under load. There are various mechanisms that processors use for this including putting secondary processor cores to sleep, reducing the clock speed, slowing down the front side bus and more.

All these strategies are designed to save power and modern laptops are getting remarkably good at conserving battery power. The idea is that when load increases the CPU is throttled back up, contributes to getting the work done and then winds down again. Power on tap, battery saving in the bank.

The problem is when you sit down at your keyboard and play that grand opening chord. All of a sudden the CPU has an awful lot to do – and it needs to do it right now - not when Windows gets around waking up the CPU.

Scroll through the Advanced Power Settings and locate the settings for “Minimum Processor State” and “Maximum Processor State” and make sure both are set to 100% - which basically means not to use any of these power saving mechanisms and to keep the CPU up and running ready to go.



If you’re running any modern PC and these options are missing, you might want to check with whoever setup or installed Windows on your computer and find out why. This setting really should be available and reviewed.

disabling WiFi in Windows device manager should be enough, DPC culprit indeed can be its driver (but again, you might offload it to a cpu core that's not used by audio engine and DAW)
virus scan or any background sync tasks should definitely be postponed or ideally disabled completely when recording

for many people, easier way is to have a computer dedicated to such audio stuff, with nothing else doing on it

 

This is done as well. I included it in my approaches already.

There is a registry mod as well. I wonder if the settin above and the mod complement each other, or they are actually the same.One thing is sure, if you do the steps above, the registry line that the mod adds won't be added.

 

Shut down your PC after making the changes and run LatencyMon again.

It should look something like this:
