Step outside of the square. So am I.
If you heard the statement instead of only reading it you would have got that.
We have a choice. To become manipulated means you have become manipulated by believing and caring what other people think as a driving force.

Everything said here is choice based. Any human interaction is. Doctrines and disciplines have been implemented by another human. They chose to implement it and some people chose to believe it. Even if someone is bound and gagged to a chair with a gun at their head still has a choice, even if it is to try and roll off the chair to dodge the bullet, knowing the next one probably won't miss or sit there mutely and take it. The very act of resistance says they refuse to be manipulated, no matter how futile.
    It's a choice.

I love you even being just a BaSs DuDe, :) [joke attempt]

There's something in there what you say, mate. You're a realist. That's what I'm aspiring to. I think I'm too much of an idealist. Thus dealing with depression is my daily routine, because the world is so far from being even close to ideal. For everybody.

Too many people are being manipulated into being dumb. By society as it is, generally. It takes a really strong will and mind to fight it and become an individual. It's interesting that so much of ads these days are talking to an individual in you... By making you just another cretin if you buy the shit they sell.

    Glasser's choice theory
The term choice theory is the work of William Glasser, MD, author of the book so named, and is the culmination of some 50 years of theory and practice in psychology and counselling.

    Characteristics
Choice theory posits behaviors we choose are central to our existence. Our behavior (choices) are driven by five genetically driven needs, survival, love and belonging, freedom, fun, and power. Survival needs include

    • food
    • clothing
    • shelter
    • breathing
    • personal safety
    • security and sex, having children
    and four fundamental psychological needs:

    • Belonging/connecting/love
    • Power/significance/competence
    • Freedom/autonomy
    • Fun/learning
Choice theory suggests the existence of a "Quality World". Glasser's idea of a "Quality World" restates the Jungian idea of archetypes but Glasser never acknowledged this. Nonetheless, Glasser's "Quality World" and what Jung would call healthy archetypes are indistinguishable.

Our "Quality World" images are our role models of an individual's "perfect" world of parents, relations, possessions, beliefs, etc. How each person's "Quality World" is somewhat unusual, even in the same family of origin, is taken for granted.

Starting from birth and continuing throughout our lives, each person places significant role models, significant possessions and significant systems of belief (religion, cultural values, and icons, etc.) into a mostly unconscious framework Glasser called our "Quality World". Glasser mostly ignores the issues of negative role models and stereotypes in choice theory.

Glasser also posits a "Comparing Place" where we compare-contrast our perception of people, places, and things immediately in front of us against our ideal images (archetypes) of these in our Quality World framework. Our subconscious pushes us towards calibrating—as best we can—our real world experience with our Quality World (archetypes).

Behavior ("Total Behavior" in Glasser's terms) is made up of these four components: acting, thinking, feeling, and physiology. Glasser suggests we have considerable control or choice over the first two of these; yet, little ability to directly choose the latter two as they are more deeply sub- and unconscious. These four components remain closely intertwined, the choices we make in our thinking and acting greatly affect our feeling and physiology.

A big conclusion for Glasser, one he repeats often, is the source of much personal unhappiness is failing or failed relationships with people important to us: spouses, parents, children, friends and colleagues.

The symptoms of unhappiness are widely variable and are often seen as mental illness. Glasser believed that "pleasure" and "happiness" are related but are far from synonymous. Sex, for example, is a "pleasure" but may well be divorced from a "satisfactory relationship" which is a precondition for lasting "happiness" in life. Hence the intense focus on the improvement of relationships in counseling with choice theory—the "new reality therapy". Those familiar with both are likely to prefer choice theory, the more modern formulation.

Choice theory posits most mental illness is, in fact, an expression of unhappiness. Glasser champions how we are able to learn and choose alternate behaviors resulting in greater personal satisfaction. Reality therapy is the choice theory-based counseling process focused on helping clients to learn to make those self-optimizing choices.

    The ten axioms

    1. The only person whose behavior we can control is our own.
    2. All we can give another person is information.
    3. All long-lasting psychological problems are relationship problems.
    4. The problem relationship is always part of our present life.
    5. What happened in the past has everything to do with what we are today, but we can only satisfy our basic needs right now and plan to continue satisfying them in the future.
    6. We can only satisfy our needs by satisfying the pictures in our Quality World.
    7. All we do is behave.
    8. All behavior is Total Behavior and is made up of four components: acting, thinking, feeling and physiology
    9. All Total Behavior is chosen, but we only have direct control over the acting and thinking components. We can only control our feeling and physiology indirectly through how we choose to act and think.
    10. All Total Behavior is designated by verbs and named by the part that is the most recognizable.

I arrived at the choice aspect through 60 years of life. Good to know someone else came to a similar conclusion. I have never read that, nor do I know who Glasser is, but there is always one who thinks that people cannot arrive at something by themselves. Then again Glasser arrived at it all on his own so common sense says that it is likely others did too :)

Glasser's theory is almost true for people who think and behave consciously and don't let the sociological or other problems have significant impacts on their choices and goals. But do all people have enough control on their thoughts and behaviors or allow subconsciously other factors make choices for them?:bleh:

So everybody has a choice, but taking in account social and financial circumstances, their choice can vary from dumb to smart. It really does make sense. Since people generally take advice from TV and social networks these days, and only sources they personally like and trust [meaning biased], no wonder our world is becoming dumber.

To elaborate more: people are not discussing things much with other people who might be in complete opposition to their views.

hmm I might be rolling my own film right now... lol I hope it does make sense to somebody what I just said. Getting further off topic... :)

Because they're getting lazier day by day mentally and physically. I really don't know why do the psychologists or other -ists not consider the laziness as a serious issue for their further studies? They talk about it but seems they intrinsically love the lazy generation and don't take steps to deal with it effectively.:bleh:

Deliberate global movement into Laziness. It's a very dangerous phenomenon. It can change the world as changed the music world into an insipid one.

But then again physics (ie gravity), biology (ie eating and drinking, maybe even breathing ? don't know maybe tha became optional), sociology (life in common, protection of the tribe of the family, social pressure that makes that you don't walk naked in the streets in the middle of the summer when it's hot, etc), psychology (need for reconnaissance, childood coming back to bight you in the ass when you least except it), economy (ever heard of heritage ? isn't being millionaire as soon as you're born the easiest way to have real choices, which you don't have if you're not, being able to get educated in things that require investement a children cannot make (ie music teacher, a piano, a piano teacher), well they all say otherwise, and well pretty much anything in humanity life does not rely on choice.
Not that there isn't the illusion of choice...Or desillusion. Whichever. At this point...
The autobiographic fantasmagory still has a hold on a few minds, I see.
There isn't one species on earth that undergoes as much determinism as humanity does. In fact unless you're the freaking son of Rockfeller or Bolloré, you pretty much won't have a damn "choice" in your life for things that matter.
It's a dated view of life, which has been given up upon since a long while ago by anyone knwing anything about life in society.

Edit ; we can create the conditions for choices in life.
Put on a yellow jacket and go burn the city. Eventually we'll get some choices. That's already how we did a few centuries back....To get collective political choices, we had to behead a lot of people.

    Noam Chomsky says,

"My own feeling is that psychology--the study of humans, the study of thinking, actions, and interpretation--is really pre-scientific.
It's pre-Galilean. It's gotta find a way to move into the era of science."

And I can see why. Glasser's stuff, and most of psychology, is just a taxonomy of custers of behaviour; disparate behaviours, loosely grouped together with a label slapped onto them.

We mostly can't control our behaviour, though, we eat more than we "choose"; have gambling, food, drug and sex addictions; are embarrassed about who we "chose" to love and have children with...most of our choices are not conscious...our "Quality World" is often given to us by parents and MTV Cribs and friends...this is NOT science!

    TRUTH!

We have become atomized, we live in personal news echo chambers, our news is carefully curated for personal consumption, to keep you attentive through the outrage factor--Fox keeps its white audience in a constant state of outrage against Blacks, socialists, immigrants, women, etc...and while we have your attention here's an ad for a car that can climb mountains.

Well Chomsky was right but we have moved forward since then. We know mostly in modern societies what determinism and economic and social reproductions rely upon.
We've gotten to that point through science.
The phenomenon you're talking about ? Manipulation through adverting, jail of consumerism, there are hundreds of scientific publications since the beginning of the 20th century on the matter.
The situationists, the Frankfort school, Chomsky himself...We don't lack data at all.

By pre-scientifc, he meant that their method is Aristotelian. It's just about grouping concepts together rather than uncovering undelying fundamental principles...so before Newton the universe was mechanical, it worked like a clock, with each part moving another....then Newton came along and found out that it actually worked like a ghost rather than a machine...there's action at a distance...the moon's gravitational pull causes the Earth to bulge and the seas to retreat from the shore, etc...that's what Chomsky meant...psychology hasn't discovered the Gravity of the mind. It's all just taxonomy.

    Yeah I got it.
It's an interesting epistemological debate. I humbly disagree with him. I think human sciences will never get their Galillean moment, because of the nature of the material they work on(humans). You don't dissect societies like frogs, and studying the mind (psychology) isn't studying the brain (neurology, although the brain obviously also plays a role in it). There may not be any gravity of the mind at all when psychology of the mind is concerned.
A lot of laws regarding human, beside the bilogical and the physical, are circonstantial and in context. They aren't laws in the end, not like you have laws of physics.

Even what you describe in your OP, it's probably easy to show that it's problems link to modernity, there aren't much other contexts that would bring those specific type of ordeals. It's without precedent because the societies we live in today, how they were historically strucured, have no precedent.
The problems in feodal or antique societies were linked to the way they were organized.

I think that if we are well informed ourselves [and the level of discussion here makes me glad to know there are other humans who are not blind to the blatant conditioning techniques applied by vested interests] we can at least help those around us to understand things on a deeper level, even if it doesn't come easily or naturally. Especially if we can get over ourselves enough not to just judge people who make poor choices as stupid...it's hard to do so, but you can learn a lot from people less intelligent than you[r perception of yourself]. The assumption of high personal intelligence is usually just an intellectual game...[i plead guilty to it, ok]
Can you build something from mud or stone? Grow a vegetable? paint, draw, play an instrument? You don't need to be literate to do these things but they still use the same amazingly complex human brain we have had for 40000 years and still don't understand.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B6bekli_Tepe
is 11000 years old, look at the complexity of some of the carving and tell me you know anything about the intelligence of our disconnected, materialist, intellectual view of our planet. Our "culture" high or low is not even a blip in the vast scale of our history.Any meaning perceived is part of our neurochemical makeup. If a few humans survive environmental disaster they will probably be deep in the rainforest living the same way as they have for thousands of years.
There is [probably] no single group in control. Just a number of groups of powerful people, with both shared and competing interests. But there aren't that many people in those groups with any real power or ill intent, although many are extremely misguided, obviously. Conspiracy theories are a distraction from the actual way that corporate interests are destroying our world, socially, environmentally, politically, medically. Here are some examples for the interested..

So what's the answer to corruption that's everywhere?
    Empowerment.
here are a few ideas that have worked for me
Thanks for your time if u followed all of this rant and read all the links, it's all stuff that i think is relevant to putting corruption to one side and realising that there is a lot more going on that is positive but not necessarily visible if you allow yourself to be bombarded by trash culture all the time. Turn off the radio, tv. leave the city at least for a few days. Forget about whether u have phone signal. take a tent, hitchhike, bus, whatever. Clear your mind. return stronger.

Realistically people and there are a lot of intelligent people on this thread, historically and academically which many of you have drawn from and it's good to see each person is attempting to support with documentation; Society only tolerates when negative scenarios are allowed to manifest to a certain point, Eventually as many people have indicated, there is only so much anyone will tolerate before there is a revolution, a revolt or some kind of upheaval to stop it from persisting.

Whether you point to Joan of Arc, Robert the Bruce, Hitler, Idi Amin, Gandi etc etc etc etc .... there are people that are nearly pure goodness with honest intent and people that are nearly pure evil. This has not changed. It has not changed. I still stick with the original statement, we have a choice. Ultimately when oppression sets in, whether through manifestation or subliminal messaging or anything for that matter, eventually the population has had enough and makes a choice to end it.

I would not be surprised if something major happens in the next decade worldwide the way it is going because history is starting to repeat itself yet again.

    EDIT:
As for manifestation in music to get back on topic - It is no different.
"Get your music for free on SPOTIFY" is another example. They do, at the expense of every musician on the planet, taking 99.5% of sales when Spotify did not pay one single cent towards the making of anything they stream. Extortionists.

An intro like in "shine on you crazy diamond" or "papa was a rolling stone" or stairway heaven is quite unlikely to be the next big "spotify hit". The songs need to captivate the listeners attention past the 30 second mark. Thats when an artist does get paid for someone listening to his song. And the first 30 seconds of an 2-4 min intro doesn't seem to be catchy enough to sustain an attention span that is very short. Nowadays it is quite unthinkable that such a song is going to be the next big chart hit.

If you do that you may return with a lot of trust. A trust that, whatever happens, you are going to be fine.

I think the point here is not that you still have a "chance to survive". Cause that is nothing you actually have control over. The point is that you are still in charge of your mind. That is where your chance lies in. A choice it is, to be more specific. Someone stated earlier that only Rockefellers son wasn't determined in some way. That only a millionaire is truly free. And yes, while it is true that I might need to work as a taxi driver to be able to sustain a shelter and food for myself (and my kids and woman eventually), that has nothing to do with my personal freedom. How many millionaires are in this world, slaves to their immature cravings? So your strength ultimately lies in your ability to watch your mind. To watch how what it wants isn't necessarily in alignment with what you need. Totally being aware of once thoughts and not being manipulated by them, that is the very act of resistance. That will be the seed for future actions which will bring exactly that into the outside, into the world.
