    It might pay to look up why Independent artists and independent labels started off.

    Realistically, a true independent artist doesn't need much at all, even today. It was always about the art and on inception, about the independent labels giving people who deserved it a break. Maybe not so much the labels now, but it's worth looking the history of it up.
