@Neyder Mixin' on closed phones is pretty suitable.. on the long run you will get some ear-sweating obviously but there's absolutely nothin' wrong with them... Unless you are using very cheap headphones with tedious emphasys and frequency cuts, but it's another kind of scenario...

Some love them...some hate them but I'm still using my cheap Sony MD-7506 Headphones. You will find a pair of these in almost every studio.

 

...aand some good but cheap wireless headphones?

 

I just got a pair of BeyerDynamic DT 990 pro 250 Ohm they are awesome...

Wireless dose'nt have the dynamic range of wired. cheap ones anyway

 

you should use open or semi-open headphones for mixing, not closed.
Closed are for recording and not for prolonged use like mixing

 

Apart from product quality, a choice of headphones depends at least in part on physical attributes (head size, ears, etc). If possible, test out some. I have the following headphones: AKG240, AKG601 (which I hate), Sony MD7506, Sennheiser 280HD, and Shure SHR840. I love my Shure cans over anything else. They are my favorite headphones, and they're not the most popular kids in town. Some people complain they are clumsy and uncomfortable. They're perfect for me.

 

I don't mix with headphones, but I suggest getting an opened-back variety as they will afford you a wider and deeper soundscape. Closed back are best if you are recording with a microphone nearby to avoid the sound spilling out and being picked up with what you are recording. Personal taste comes into play with all things audio, but I track with AudioTechnica ATH-M50 closed back cans and I like them very much.

Thank you for the suggestion! I have a some Yamaha HS8s but have recently moved into a friends house so need to stay quiet. Kinda looking for something that would be good for mixing hip hop and pop rock music.

tried a bunch before finding the 990's, easily the best of the bunch. may cost a little extra but the results are completely worth it

 

I tried the Beyerdynamics DT770 recently and returned it, they were 250 Ω

sound was quite good but keep in mind if you ever use it with your laptop or com it won't be very loud,
I will probably get the DT880 , you can find a much cheaper price online...

Does anyone have a comment on 32 Ω vs. higher Ω cans ? Is there too much
trade off in quality vs. versatility? All of the Beyerdynamics I have seen so far
do come with a 3.5 mm jack with a 1/4" adapter

I'm using Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro 250 ohm, very satisfied with the mix results. I guess Beyerdynamic is the way to go

 

I use Sennheiser HD 650 with Sonarworks Reference 3 custom calibration. When people say "you can't mix on headphones" .. think again .. it's 2016 They also have calibration for other models like Beyer Dynamic btw.
