So, I just had a go and there certainly are problems with cubase's video features in windows 7- i can't even get an imported mp4 video clip to display properly! I'm thinking cubase is relying on a specific windows 10 direct x lib function or something... Mind you, if i was doing anything substantial with video, i'd automatically export audio from cubase & import into a premere project anyway, though it would certainly be a showstopper if required to write music specifically for a video clip... Damnit, this might even force me to migrate to windows 10/11 too at some point too, FFS :snuffy: - not anytime soon i hope! :)

P.S. Is there now a general consensus on the best stripped-down win 10 build for daw use or do we now have to wait for win 11 to settle-in?

I may go to 7 Pro and just deal with installs the best I can until things are smooth, make a disc image for my OS backup and just use it when I need to, it will be online.

Yeah, I use Studio One for everything except scoring video. That's all Cubase for me.

Looks like you're going to have to tell Bill Gates all about your exotic pron prefs - which will no doubt trigger perverse traumatic stress and cost him a fortune in psychoanalysis to recover from... so at least you'll know you got even with the sneaky scumbag in the end!

Try duct tape/gaffer tape instead! :winker:
It's this stupidly sticky fabric tape that we borrowed from some industry that has air or water ducts in it, and so we called it gaffer tape and stuck cables down onstage with it, and wrapped up roadies with it.
Or maybe you are both sponsored by the company Duck Tape. lol.

I haven't read every comment in this thread, so please excuse me if this has already been mentioned.

The biggest reason for using Windows 7 for me would be "legacy" hardware that has no updated drivers and therefore is not compatible with the latest and greatest anything.

I would have believed you without a picture of some that isn't yours.
    And without you shouting "DUCK".
And what does it say on there under the word tape, bro?
    Oh yeah, DUCT! lol
    Definitely an American! :bleh:
    And sponsored by Duck Tape.

You're kinda hung up on tape huh? You really think people don't know what gaffers tape is??? Tape is not what the thread is about. Maybe start a new thread called "Gaffer tape oh gaffer tape."

Seriously though enough with the tape. :mates:

Lots of people still using Win7 with older programs,
I was still running a DAW machine with XP until 2019 and finally gave it up due to moving.
    So I was running W10 on 2 machines, Win7 & Xp.
I had all my software labeled [w7+] [w10+] etc, as well as same kind of labeling for presets and the version required to run them.

It is nice to be done with all that.
Now i see Win10 in the same way I saw XP & 7.
Runs great and don't want to **** with it.
Is M$ inspecting my anus? Feel free...

If it's just a condition built into the installer etc., it's often possible with Microsoft's Application Verifier. With the "HighVersionLie" option it kinda does the same thing as the well known "Compatibility mode", but just the other way round: It makes your software think that you're running a newer Windows version.

Revo Uninstaller Pro works like this when you also use it for installation :)

There is only one way I know how this is done with any software.
You have to know EXACTLY what components within Studio One are doing a compatibility check and edit those components. You also have to know exactly what changing anything will do as a result (possibly hexadecimally). Even then, there may be a multitude of failsafe mechanisms coded in that prevent the application from working, starting or running properly if they are edited. It's messy. Yes it can be done. If you know someone who is a master of reverse engineering, they may find it simple. For me and most end-users, it's not something I would attempt without feeling that I may well not only screw up my application but possibly crash my O/S if it does work. Grey area.

If Studio One is full x64 and your windows is 32bit, forget it altogether. It has likely been written for a 64bit O/S. It may work, but not how it was intended and likely very sluggish if it does work at all as well as you having less than 4GB RAM accessible it would be a dog.

Yeah, I wasn't thinking about that. I'm running 32 now and want to go up to 64 or 128 soon.

It would still be something I would like to have, just as an option for whatever.

    you have 3 options:
    - stay with win10
    - wait for win11
    - change the DAW

Interesting. Do you remember which plugins those were?
How long do you think I have to wait for Win11 to be stable and practical?

Let's look at the past. Quickly in the market to make money. Then a number of updates -> when it was more or less stable -> the support ran out -> there is no general answer - because such an operating system is highly complex today ... I would say 3 - 6 months and some problems later or never

Thanks a bunch! Sorry, I skipped out on Win10 so far so I can't recall how long it took last time. I remember the updates messing up a lot of peoples files during the process so I wanted to skip out on all of that.

So idk if waiting for Win11 or maybe even going with Win10 since I've only heard praise about it for the last year at least so it seems plenty stable to me now. I always lag behind.
