The idiots! That club owner is a complete moron, who doesn’t have a clue about this. Technically a CDJ is nothing more but a digital tool that uses ancient digital technology. I mean this is the era of the Internet and portable devices and not the era of CDs! People should realise that it is not the tool, but the person behind the tool that counts the most thus it doesn’t matter what tool is used except with better and more modern tools like a laptop the final top quality results can be achieved faster so then why restrict it in the first place. It is all about music at the end.
So I have a suggestion to this club owner: Mind your own f..king business and be happy if the music is good and sounds good in your club, but do not ever try to restrict a musician of what tools he/she can use or not to achieve great results for the sake of great music, please.

Just for fun, lets say a guitarist plays a guitar, a keyboardist plays the keyboards, and a drummer plays the drums. So it follows that a Disk Jockey should play disks, no? :mates:

people who can't actually play a real instrument become DJ's
It is a sad statement of the human condition when watching & listening to a person stand on stage and press a button becomes musicianship,

onekutcha, if you read the article you'd see that the club owner isn't banning laptops in the booth, he's simply saying that unless the laptop is actually adding to your set in some way, it shouldn't be there.

lawl, and slapping some strings or hitting some drums repeating the same songs day in and day out is?
a stage has not been a place for musicianship since jazz.

well that's easy then, you just need to say I need it to play my pre-made set-up.

Back in the day, DJing was about a dancing dancefloor, people didn't came to "watch" the dj.:guru:
these days People need to admire so badly they forget what it is al about.:dunno:

I don't get why dj's need a stage to begin with, where did that even start??
it wasn't like that before US got involved. And got a tiny bit of influence in edm if you ask me...:deep_facepalm::deep_facepalm::deep_facepalm:

My favourite venue ever to DJ in had the booth tucked away in the corner, and no one even noticed you.
I had a good time and so did the punters.
I wish there were more places like that.

    ...spot on.

It's a totally moote action/measure from the club owner banning laptops if they don't 'contribute' something significant to your set. (whatever that means). He should then also boot the Pioneer CDJ's with a sync button or sync over UTP. Moote and utterly nonsense.
It's about what you do with it. How it sounds coming together. What it does to the croud. He should ban the 'jesus posture' and unjust gloating. LOL. Bottom line good DJ'ing is about the music and elevating people to a higher musical plane. If a laptop is involved, hell yeah.
The owner of the club should 'screen' the dj for over inflated ego syndrome before turning him loose on his dancefloor. :winker:

    That's ok for me...
If the promoter/owner doesn't want to fullfill my rider/doesn't want me to play because of his technology-fascism he still has to my pay fees.

There's one thing i don't get. Would electronic producer playing their material live be a DJ, and would a dude matching other people's songs and messing with filters and crossfader sometimes also be a DJ? Somebody please explain this to me.

  20. I imagine that he felt that he needed to separate the wheat from the chaff, i.e., one button DJ's who cannot finesse on the fly and create in the moment, charging the atmosphere of the club with the vibe of the room that night. That is how I see one of the larger aspects of the "ART" of this particular craft. But really, what the hell do I know, this isn't my orbit, isn't my scene, and really the only thing I know about clubs and clubbing comes from having lunch with Mary Mack and talking art in Charles DeGaul airport a while back while striking up a short lived friendship between our common flights. She was very nice. I had no idea who she was until we started rapping.
