holy... goddamn... where the hell did that cable go... which psu went with that [insert synth name]... hey why the hell is my mixer only giving one channel... and when the hell did i get so much gear????

these are but a few of the questions that have been going through my mind for the past few hours. why the f did i even start with this... oh right caus living rooms arent supposed to be studio, studio's arent supposed to be bedrooms and bedrooms arent supposed to be studio's (unless it's a bdsm studio)

I make a little label tab from tape and wrap it around the wire and write the name of what it belongs to on it.
Paying a little extra for coloured cables also helps to figure out whats connected to what.

To be honest my favourite part of music is building new studios. I wish I could set your studio up for you.

Oh wait you're under my bed... omw.

    As MYCBeats said. ;)

Amazing how such a simple thing helps so much, and for so long. I write something on a piece of paper, stick it onto a piece of clear sellotape and then wrap it around the cable. Those few spent moments can pay returns for years. And cable ties, of course. :D

    I hate cables.

Oh God! Don't get me started. Oh no, too late.... I'm hyperventilating just thinking about it.
I try and do a clean out of the studio around two or three times a year. Check for dead animals. Bags of drugs. Misplaced singers. One constant I've found is I always end up with about twenty audio cables doing nothing! Oh, and that's after I've untangled the "knot fairy's" handiwork. The last time I did a clean up I got everything out and would just look at the piles of stuff and felt sick to my stomach. My partner said "just do a little bit each day, you'll get there" She was right. I did get there after about five weeks of staring at a short thunderbolt cable and shouting at it "weren't you longer? I used to plug you into the Apollo and the Apollo hasn't moved, but now you won't reach, so have you shrunk or am I going mad?"
I think you know the answer to this. The hint is in the fact that I spent weeks talking to cables.

I use painter tape before unplugging anything. It does not let glue on things and it's easy to write on it.
Once finish it's very easy to take off.

aah yes agree on that... hate it too, i write the path on the tape where is goes into and then...yes an arrow :)
    Example:
if i have a cable that goes my tc electronic M3000, i write

    "M3000 R
-->" (so that cable goes to IN the M3000)

    "M3000 L
<--" (and that cable goes OUT of the M3000)

so the arrow follows the cable, not the words

Just started writing on the PSU what it actually goes to. This has been a huge help when I have to pull some of my studio to go out live. That's usually when the studio gets a reconfigure. But it's a total cable jungle back there behind the rack which houses the MOTU HD192 and my preamps right now. It's like free cable day though when you get finished and have a few left over.

Be afraid, be very afraid of what lurks in the deepest darkest recesses of your desk. I had a friend who disappeared while trying to sort out cables dangling down from her interface only to reappear as a talking dust bunny two years later. It is a very sad situation. The only thing that she can relate to about me now is my belly button lint, and that's about it. We used to be best girlfriends. A very sad situation indeed. She is cuter than she has ever been though!

Label, label, label. And if it's a permanently plugged rear patch, label both ends.
