The first of what will soon be many devices based on Intel's new 14nm Broadwell CPU architecture... Link: Asus T300 Chi

I'm kinda wondering if these laptop/tablets will have any uses for music ... the big news is they are fanless!

With 12.5-inch displays and 2,560 x 1,440-pixel resolution, I can see where they will come in handy for general use, possibly a very portable "musical scratch pad" and composing tool, and maybe even a device for capturing vocals or anything you need to record useing a microphone without fan noise.

Sounds promising, or does it? :bleh:

No fan? Not for music!! Today's plugin standards (VST, AU, AAX) use complex realtime math. For the computer, math = heat. No fan means the CPU must be clocked down. Good for office work and movies.

I don't know but that's a hefty resolution.I'm pretty sure if the gpu can handle a resolution like that and not get hot.I'm bettin the cpu can handle at least some mid grade equivalent PC processing. It may surprise all of us,time will tell. All I'm sayin is that's serious resolution 2560 x 1440! I'm running 1920 x 1200 on my desktop. This is attractive just for that alone.Even if it's just Windows mobile or Android. I didn't see what os was mentioned.Be sweet if they make one running a full win 7 or 8.We already know it'll run linux.Next step tablet hackintosh, muahahaha. I would totally rock a triple boot tablet if it'd run everything and they made such a thing. But I think it only exists in the imagination :dunno:

Edit: Ooop @ 1:47 on the youtube vid
    Win 8.1/8.1 Pro!!!

    Looks very promising!!!

I wasn't suggesting it as a main machine, I have a 6-Core beast for that ... but for recording vocals I need no fans! And I also need a portable little songwriting scratchpad, and a device to view all my music theory stuff, so it's more of an assistant computer to my main rig

Bear in mind this in an Intel "Tick" iteration and they are shrinking the electronics from 22NM to 14NM, and that is the reason why they don't need a fan, because the new manufacturing process is around 40% more heat efficient.

It will run a small Reaper setup no problem ... great for recording vocals without the fan noise, and sufficient for doodling new ideas away from your main computer. Don't forget other manufacturers will come up with their own implementations as well.

I think the big news is the 14NM die shrink, and even MBP are going to benefit from this at the top end. Basically I would hang on before making any new purchases until the full Broadwell roll-out is underway.

However, I think the 6-Core Broadwell CPU is around a year away, as they have only just released the Haswell 6-Core Extreme CPU.

I'm with you, Zenarcist. I've been using a Lenovo T410 laptop [upgraded with SSD] which is completely quiet for live recordings for quite some time now. I'm a very happy camper with this setup. :grooves: I've got dual-boot Linux Debian Xfce and Windows 7 on it, connected to a TC Electronic Studio Konnekt 48 [firewire]. Great setup for live recording.

The only problem I see with these new laptops is lack of connectivity. My Thinkpad has excellent firewire and USB 3 and 2 connectors. These can only work with USB audio cards and you cannot even put an ExpressCard firewire card in it. That's a shame. However, I'm a lover of small, quiet and cool [literally] things like this!
