Well, since automation is finicky & fragile in DAWs, I try to avoid it by using compression, clip gain, PMOD, multichannel split, more tracks & parenting, etc. And sometimes you can get away with no automation by chance, or if your classical conductor is good.

Which daw are you using?

 

- Audition: make a few points, and have a volume plateau of exactly -2dB. But you can't get that exactly, only as exact as your muscle movements & UI zoom.
- Reaper: make a few points and plateaus, you can have multiple plateaus of various gains, but they will probably never exactly match up.

If you have audio clips, you can have clip gain which guarantees the gain will remain exactly constant throughout the clip. If you have a bus, you can only use automation with the points I made above. If you move clips & points around, you may end up with slanted plateaus & glitches.

I find it less frustrating to disregard automation and accomplish my aims through other means.

This just goes to show that you don't need fancy drum vsti's and drums, all you need are stock plugins and these to make magic

 

I made pretty nice snare drum sound using cookie box and post processing.
