    Hey,

can anyone let me know what sort of synths where used in the making of the Blade Runner soundtrack.

Even better would be some tips on recreating the pads/leads used in the film using modern synths/romplers etc

obviously Vangelis is a genius but ideas on trying to get his dreamy sound would be dope.

    Cheers

Blade Runner Main Titles theme mainly use the Yamaha CS-80 synthesizer for melodic part. Sound category is brass.

May be reproduced by using ME80v2 virtual instrument: VST x86/x64 for Windows, VST/AU (x86/x64) for MacOS X. Developped by Memory Moon (Gunnar Ekornas, aided by Chris Kerry), ME80v2 is donationware, lastest version is 2.1, costs $US 40 / 36,20 euros (I've bought this day using PayPal). Also available as DEMO (with audio dropouts). ME80v2 factory patch I'm using is RG Bladerunner.

NOTE: previous ME80 version is 1.80, remains available as 32-bit VST for Windows ($US 30).

Vangelis recorded, mixed and produced the score for "Blade Runner" in his own recording space, Nemo Studios, in 1982. He utilised many contemporary electronic instruments in order to create the atmospheric soundscapes, which he crafted on an ad-hoc basis. This was done by by viewing videotapes of scenes from the film in the studio, and then improvising pieces in synchronisation with the images on the screen. He also applied the use of some foley techniques, using the synthesisers to produce diagetic and non-diagetic sounds. The most prominent synthesiser used in the score was the Yamaha CS-80, which can be heard in the opening scenes, and subsequently throughout the rest of the film. Other synthesisers employed by Vangelis included two Roland instruments: the ProMars Compuphonic, and the Jupiter-4; and a Sequential Circuits Prophet-10.[13] He also utilised a variety of traditional instruments, including, gamelan, glockenspiel, gong, snare drum, timpani and tubular bells.[14]

Didn't know you were into that kind of stuff remix. Good shit.

Gforce Virtual String Machine and the expansion could be useful and sample some classic synths.

Enjoy a tribute by Decoded Feedback with a cool video:

Me too. I'm really into those kinds of sounds, very nostalgic and strange. It was a creative time in musical history. I would check out GForce's Virtual String Machine and the expansion for it. They sample a lot of the synths that were used and it's a nice collection that would come in handy particularly for what you're looking for. Then Arturia has a CS-80 emulation that might come in handy as well.

    Great stuff. :grooves:
